sugar-free gum during pregnancy

I'm a big sugar-free gum chewer but I switched to chewing sugar gum during my first pregnancy because I heard somewhere that artificial sweetners weren't good for you while pregnant.  After never having had a cavity before becoming pregnant (I am a little obsessive about oral health) I ended up with six cavaties after my son was born.  I am pregnant again and despereately craving gum, but I am totally freaked out about chewing sugar gum now.  Has anyone heard anything about the risks of chewing sugar-free gum?  I avoid artificial sweetners in all other areas and it seems like a few pieces of gum a week should be fine.  Thoughts?

Re: sugar-free gum during pregnancy

  • i've heard the same thing about artificial sweeteners, but I don't know if it's that you can't have them at all, or you should limit them. I'm sure gum doesn't have much.  Especially if you aren't chewing it all day every day.  Unfortunately I have never been able to have any artificial sweeteners- I have an allergic reaction to aspratame. I find it SO hard to find gum or mints with actual sugar (or corn syrup) lately-- everything has the fake sweeteners!!

Also, just as an FYI, the cavities may not have been just sugar related. Pregnancy can really kill your teeth!  My mom had never had cavities until she was pregnant and got a few with each child- and not many more in the almost 30 yrs since!  and that was before the nutra-sweet generation.  I'm also a bit OCD about my teeth and i'm so nervous about it!!

  • My dentist recommended switching to sugar free gum for pregnancy if I wasn't using it already especially after a meal if I couldn't brush right away. Pregnancy is hard on teeth/gums and the sugar free gum can help minimize the impact, I guess. I never thought to check w/ my OB though.

  • It's fine. It's almost impossible to find gum that is not sugar free. It's not like you are swallowing it- chew away!
  • I chew sugar-free gum every day.  I mean I don't swallow it (that would be weird!), so I don't think it is really a big deal.

  • swallowing the gum has nothing to do with it. You are still swallowing all the "flavor" out of it. The sugar/ sugar substitute will still get into your system after it's in your mouth for a few minutes (assuming you're swallowing your saliva and not drooling Stick out tongue)

  • I'm sure that the sugar free stuff isn't great for you, but it's not on the absolute no-no list, so I say as long as you chew in moderation and don't do a whole heap of diet drinks and stuff on top of it, it will be fine. I mean really, there's not a whole lot of sugar substitutes in just one piece of gum. We're talking what? Less than 2 or 3 mg here?

  • Try Spry Gum, it's flavored with Xylitol (sp?) and is supposed to be better for you than regular artificial sweeteners...just a thought.
