When did LO get first bath?

When did you bathe LO? DS was born last Thursday and had a bath in the hospital. We came home Sunday and I was wondering when I should give him his first sponge bath.

FWIW, I have wiped his face, neck, and bum down with a warm washcloth soaked in lukewarm water since those areas have gotten a little soiled.

TIA.

Re: When did LO get first bath?

  • We came home on a Sunday and did the first sponge bath Tuesday I believe.

  • I gave DS a sponge bath every other day starting our second day home from the hospital.  I think as long as you're wiping down anything that gets 'dirty' he's fine but it's nice to give them a thorough rinse too.

Also, I was dying for his circ and belly button to fully heal so we could actually bathe him; I was afraid he'd hate it since he screeches during sponge baths but we tried it out the other day and he LOVES sitting in his little tub.  I know that wasn't your question but just something to look forward to =o)

  • We had one in the hospital and gave her the first one at home a week later. Our pedi told us that her skin doesn't create the oils that ours does, and doesn't need to be bathed more than once per week - although with blow outs and projectile spit up, I find that we are bathing her at least 2x per week.

  • DD had a bath in the hospital, and then her first at home bath today. Frankly, I was in no rush to bathe her, as she absolutely hates it, and obviously she isn't getting dirty.

  • DD got a bath in the hospital on a Wednesday and we gave her the first at home bath on that friday.  We did it early just because the hospital bath didn't get all the blood chunks out of her hair- it was really matted in and pretty gross.  Since then, I wipe her face, hands, and creases down with a wash cloth daily and started rinsing her bum off under the sink daily after a bad week-long bout with diaper rash.  But we only do a full on bath with soap about once a week.

Ew! WTH, it cant be THAT hard to clean a babys hair, nasty.

Also, we waited 1 week. Then did a sponge bath.

  • we came home monday and we did it on wednesday... will also do it tomorrow.. although his umbilical cord is hanging on by a thread so maybe he will get a real bath tomorrow!

  • My LO didn't even have a bath in the hospital...he was fairly clean though. His first bath at home was well over a week...I think closer to two weeks old. Made sure his belly button had healed a bit.

  • EEwww What kind of hospital would leave blood chunks in a babies hair?? I gave my daughter a sponge bath 2 days after being home, then every 2-3 days from there. She hates it so much and I dont like how cold she gets, even if I do it quick and cover her.
  • I would wipe my Son down almost daily with a damp wash cloth. But he got his first real bath at about week 2. The day after the umbilical stump fell off.

  • He got sponge baths until last Friday (not yesterday, but Friday last week) when his cord finally fell off.

I think we gave him his first sponge bath the 2nd night we were home from the hospital.  Our pedi said we only need to bathe him every 2-3 days right now.  We generally give him a bath every other night.
