What's the difference between discharge and leaking

I've heard there is increased discharge with pregnancy which I have definitely been experiencing. My doctor asked me if I had any leaking and I said no, just extra discharge. It was only after I left the doctor that I started wondering what the difference was between the two. I looked up some information but it's still not very clear. I'm guessing odds are it's fine, but of course I would have to find something else to freak out about : )

You're sure he wasn't talking about your breasts? I've seen a few posts from women due in March that have experienced some - I'm not one of them... aside from that, I don't know!!! Good luck - I'd call Monday if you're still unsure and/or concerned!!!

i had that same question. i have more d/c than i ever imagined and wondered if it was amniotic fluid leaking. in my case it's not, it's just the excess d/c. my dr explained to me that leaking fluid would be more consistent and may even gush a bit, drip down my leg or be more evident when laying down. if you are really concerned call your dr's office and ask them for more information.

I don't know what your doctor was referring to. Some women refer to the extra watery discharge as leaking (see comment in earlier post re. leaky faucet!), but there is also the possibility of leaking amniotic fluid. I don't know why your doctor would ask that randomly, so I don't know what he was asking about. If you were measuring small or had low fluid levels at your u/s, the question would make sense. If you're asking how do you know if you have really water discharge or are leaking amniotic fluid? I think sometimes it is hard to tell and I don't really have an answer.

Thanks for the feedback. After reading through the comments it made me think maybe she was referring to my breasts because her next question was if I had been leaking any breast milk. I assumed they were two seperate questions but maybe she was just clarifying by being more specific. Okay, I feel much better now. Thanks!

My dr. asked me this too and I said that I was having some extra "water-like" discharge and she said that's not leaking, just d/c.

Like pp said, my dr also said that leaking would be continuous and even a gush or dripping down your leg.

My doctor asked me the same question at my last appointment. And she was referring to leaking any amnoitic fluid. I think it is just a precautionary question...like have you had any bleeding. I think you would know if you were leaking fluid, I think it would be much more obvious than discharge.
