XP: Twin moms deliver at 33 or 34 weeks?

Hi ladies,

Let me preface by saying I am going to lurk around on your board in a second to see if I can find answers and by all means direct me to a particular post if one applies.  I am just sitting in the hospital with lots of concerns and hope you can help.  TIA and Happy Thanksgiving!

Please give me any positive stories you can.  I know 33 weeks is great considering 11 weeks ago I was getting a cerclage and praying my babies survived.

Now I am being watched for pre-e and protein in my urine, though my bp is consistently good.  We are probably going to be delivering this week or next.  I was given the betamethasone shots yesterday and the day before.

The ironic thing is, I was admitted for contractions 5 minutes apart on Sunday and  I imagined my cervix would be the reason I deliver early, but it is still holding, thick, and closed.

How long did your LOs stay in the NICU (I know this varies by child)?  What were the main things your LOs had to develop before being sent home?

Any positive stories in general are appreciated!  TIA!

  • congrats on making it to 33 wks!  my twins were born at 34.6 wks.  landry was 4.2 lbs and hudson was 5.9.  initially they put hudson in the new born nursery but, he was burning to many calories trying to keep warm so, he joined his sister in the NICU.   they spent two wks there as eaters/growers.  See post below for my current concern.  GL!!!!

  • My DS was born at 34w5d and spent 15 days in the NICU, but I had no steroid shots. He needed 5 days of breathing assistance and 9 days of feeding/growing help.

To go home, generally, the babies will need to keep up their own body temp, be able to take a bottle/breastfeed for all feeds, have no apneas/bradycardias for a specified period of time (sometimes 5 days, sometimes longer), and pass the car seat test. There are some exceptions or extra circumstances that can add stipulations or redact some of these, but that's the typical list. GL and I hope you're able to keep them in even longer than you think!

ETA: Sorry I'm not a twin mom - I didn't read carefully that you wanted to hear from twin moms specifically.

That's ok.  I appreciate the response!

  • Hi and Congrats on the 33 week twins :)

My ggg were born 33.6 spent 17,17 and 27 days in NICU as feeders / growers.

Probably longer then they needed but they were transfered NICU's at Day 7 and the small one had some extra problems because I had a placenta abruption.

    Good luck!

  • Good work!

My girls were born at 32 weeks and 1 day (not quite33-34 weeks, sorry!), weighed 4.5 lbs each, and they spent 58 days in NICU (had very immature lungs and required quite a bit of assistance with breathing and oxygenation)... however, out of the nearly two months in the NICU half the time they were working mostly on feeding challenges.

I saw a few sets of twins born at similar gestation to my girls, and the health problems they had, and length of NICU stay really varied.

Good luck to you and your family... you've come so far already!

  • I'm not a twin mom but I had my daughter at 34 weeks. She was in the NICU for 17days. She was on CPAP for 3 days, then a nasal canula for 4. After that just a feeder/ grower. Typically they have to be able to maintain their body weight, temp, and be able to nipple all their feedings for 48 hours before they can come home. We had most issues with the feedings, she'd get too tired to eat and had to be gavauged (fed through a tube). It was super frustrating.
