TTC After a Loss

X-ray question

So here's my problem. I hurt my foot and it has doubled in size.  I can't bend any toes except my big one and it's all purple and blue.  I went to the doctor and he said it is likely a stress fracture, which means that they wouldn't cast it anyway and it will heal on its own with time.

I still have a week before I can test for BFP. Just in case, would you wait the week for AF before going for the x-rays?  I have the paperwork sitting here and can't bring myself to go.  I want to do everything I can to ensure that this baby is my take home baby (that is if I even get a BFP).

What would you do?

Re: X-ray question

  • Go. Take care of yourself. I am in the don't stop doing what you normally do until you get a BFP camp, so that influences my opinion (just so you know) but I would go. That sounds a little more severe than a stress fracture to me and if you don't take care of injuries like that they can haunt you for years to come. Even if they don't cast it they will likely give you an air cast boot thing to help protect it.

I understand that you want to do everything you can for your potential baby. You can tell the xray tech that you may be pregnant and they will give you a lead apron that will cover you and protect you from any potential scatter radiation there is. Also, the machines used now are very precise and have things on them to limit the radiation that scatters anyway.

The risk of long term damage or not healing correctly combined with knowing the lead safety measures far outweighs the risk for me.

    I hope it feels better!

  • I know that at my doctor's office they have that cover up for your stomach. They ask if there is a chance you could be pregnant before hand and they use the lead apron.

I would ask my doctor though just to be sure.

I know that when my SIL was pregnant she had to do xrays for her job (she's a dental assistant) and the doctor told her as long as she wore the apron and limited her exposure it wouldn't be a problem.

Hope that helps some and that your foot gets better soon.

Edit: Changed Iron apron to lead (could not think of what type it was)

This exactly!  If you are concerned tell the xray tech you may be pregnant but I wouldn't wait. Take care of yourself ao it doesn't get worse.

  • I would get the X-Ray.  Just tell the tech you may be pg and they will put the lead vest on you and work very hard to keep it pointed in just the area of your foot.  GL and let us know how it goes!

  • I am a Radiologic Technologist and take xrays daily, and even if you were 6 months pg it is absolutely safe to have a foot xray provided your abdomen has a lead apron over it, a foot xray will have absolutely zero to do with if you have a take home baby or not. In fact if your foot heals incorrectly because of what someone "thinks" is wrong you could be in a much more worse boat than if you just got it checked out correctly to begin with. Please go get your foot looked at.

  • Thanks for your advice.  I've had my foot up most of the day today and the swelling has gone down a little but it's still lovely shades of blue and grey.  I'm thinking I'll go tomorrow.  It's not a long weekend here, and I've already missed more days of work this school year than the last few combined, but what's one more?
