What was your reason to stop BFing?

Re: Switching from BF to FF Non-clicky poll

  • I was having supply issues- I would have to wait 4 or so hours to get 3 oz.  This was fine when he was eating 2 oz at a time, but when he got up to 4 oz every 2 hours it just wasn't worth it.  Also, I was having major pumping issues.  I got to 6 weeks which was my goal, so I was happy with it.  He was also struggling with reflux and seems to be doing better now that we have him on the AR formula.

  • Going back to work. I teach 4th grade and it would be impossible to pump during the day.
  • supply issues. I was losing my mind nursing, pumping and then supplementing. I was also constantly worried about her getting enough and her weight. I'm a much happier mommy aside from the regret of not being able to BF longer than a month.

Mostly this for me too, except I was EPing, due to latch issues. Pumping was easy at first, but once she started needing more I was unable to keep up. I got to one month of EBF but now fully FF and the stress is gone and I know she is getting what she needs and is healthy.

This for me except I'm not getting paid, I'm just an intern. :p  I hope to continue BF at night, but we'll just see how it all works out.

  • We had horrible latching issues from the beginning- she just would not do it and each feeding ending up with both of us crying. I also tried EPing but I could not keep up with what she wanted to eat- it was draining.

Also, I'm a teacher and there is no time or place where I could have pumped. I did not imagine I would be giving my baby formula, but I am happy with my decision and we are both a lot more relaxed!

  • basically no supply- I EBF for the first week and my pedi had to tell me to pump to see what I was giving LO because he kept losing weight. Turns out my supply never got past .5 oz. (after 8 pumping attempts a day) So what started as supplementing eventually became FF only after  10/26.
  • I hemorrhaged after LO's delivery and required a blood transfusion. This immediately affected my supply. Then a few days after I left the hospital, I had to be re-admitted for pulmonary embolism. That hospital stay, and the blood thinners I now have to take, totally killed what was left of my supply.

  • I had mastitis twice, and thrush. No matter how much I drained my breasts, I got clogs on a daily basis. I tried lecithin supplements, feeding the baby in plank position with my breast hanging over him, massaging in hot water...nothing worked.

  • I have a very limited diet due to severe food allergies...and there was something in my diet that wasn't agreeing with LO - causing major gas pains & more extreme reflux...the pedi & my allergist thought that limiting my food even more wasn't the best option for me to stay healthy - and we switched to formula after 6 weeks...and thankfully DD is doing amazing & has been sleeping through the night since the switch!  it really helped with her digestive issues!

  • To save my sanity so other people like my H, IL's and Mom can feed and care for the twins if I need a break and/or some sleep. I pumped for awhile but my supply tanked. Plus I'm taking Cymbalta now for my sh!tasctic PPD. Sort of sane, relatively happy Mommy trumps breastfeeding, unfortunately. Took awhile to get over the guilt too.

  • My supply was almost non exsistant, even after going on medication to get it flowing.  I also had to top him up with formula about half the time anyway.  I stopped BF at about 2 weeks but pumped about 5-6 times a day up until he was 3 months. DS only got about 2-3 bottles of BM a day for the first 2 months and the last month he was only getting 1 bottle a day.  I wish i was able to BF him still, but i was happy i stopped pumping. it became  so time comsuming and impractical. esp since he was only getting 1 bottle a day anyways.

Just curious on what medication did they giv eyou to get the flow going?

My milk never came in... :( she was losing weight to fast and Pedi said we had to supplement because she was just not gaining, she was losing. So we supplemented and did both till the milk should have come in, ,but it never did.

  • I became depressed after DH deployed and just gave up when DS was 3 weeks. I now regret my decision.
