When to switch to no underwire bras?

I have heard that under wire can block your milk ducts, but I don't know when we are supposed to switch.  I am to the point where I have to buy a new bra or two, should I buy ones without under wire?  Also, any advice on what type/brand of non under wire ones that support for a 36D/38D?  I am a teacher and have to dress nice everyday so I can't just wear a sport bra.

TIA and Happy Thanksgiving!Big Smile

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

I have actually never heard of that before. I wore a wire-in bra through out my sons whole pregnancy (as well as after) and I never had a problem with my milk, I actually had a really good supply.

  • I'm just switching to non-underwire when I buy a bigger size bra (which I need to do). I'd heard the same thing about milk production, although I don't know how true it is. I just figure it will probably be more comfortable.

  • I had to stop wearing underwire in my 2nd month because it was just too uncomfortable.  Pea in the Pod has nice non-underwire bras that you can wear with formfitting clothes  (ie they don't do that sportsbra smoosh thing.)

  • Yup Pea in the Pod & am now a 40 D which is an XL, looks like a nursing/sleep bra but try it you'll be suprised by the shape it gives you & comfort-$35 sometimes you can catch the buy 3 bras get 1 free sale.
  • I heard this when I was pg with dd and right after having her I wore bras with no underwire (I think they were from target) and hated it. I switched back to underwire after a week or so and never had any difficulty with my milk...I nursed that kid for a year! Smile

  • You don't need to worry about the underwire clogging a milk duct in pregnancy while your breasts are just preparing for milk production.  You *can* wear underwire bras while nursing, but make sure the wires sit back against your body and don't come up on the sides at your breast tissue, which is how clogged milk ducts can happen.  I would have a few wireless nursing bras to start and then shop in-person for underwire nursing bras after your milk comes in...you know what size you'll be and you'll be able to confirm that the wire hits in the right places.

  • I can't wear underwire because I am allergic to the metal.  But when you do switch, I found the bras at Nordstrom are waaay better than Victoria's Secret and cheaper.  Extra bonus is they fit them for you.

  • I have huge boobs (36H right now) so going without underwire is not an option. I was told by the girl at Nordstrom who did my last fitting that underwire is okay as long as you make sure it is properly fitted.

  • I never wear underwire bras.  Even Victoria's Secret has no-wire bras, so you don't have to wear a sports bra just because you don't want wire.  Unfortunately they stopped making their best one last year - ugh!  Currently I'm wearing a no-wire from Motherhood.  It's pretty comfortable, supportive, relatively flattering to my shape and it was only $20.  It is actually a 38D, but for some reason Motherhood's width sizes run small and I'm also using a bra extender.  Pre-pregnancy I was a 34B, so I'm pretty sure that I didn't really jump to a 40... although I do think the D+ is right.

  • Never heard that one before. But I switched a month or so ago because my other bras were to small anyways.

  • I've had 2 boys that I've BF. I always wear underwire bras and never had a clogged duct.
  • I have never heard of this and fully intend to wear underwire. I have never not worn underwire in my life and I definitely need that support. Once you get up into the D's underwire, IMO, is your best bra friend.
