opinions PLEASE

OK LADIES.  i am trying not to be alarmed adn freak out b/c my doctor isn't freaking out, but you know how it is for mothers to be worried about their children. you can see my daughters birth weights in my siggy.

ava the biggest was 6.5 on friday at a check up and today is 6.9 and olivia was 5. 13 and a half on friday and today at weight check was only 5. 14. the doctor said well at least she isn't losing. i'm like hello she gained a half ounce in five days, which i didn't expect tons b/c she really won't eat much. like an ounce every 3 hours. we are on zantac 2 times a day for acid. doctor did say increase to 3 times a day for medicine.

i am really worried, why won't my daughter eat alot and grow faster. i am trying not to obsess over it but it's very hard not too. a few weeks ago doctor did tell us to put tsp of cereal in her bottle to give her more calories and we did and she did better so we stopped the cereal, but dh and myself decided today we should start going back to cereal every bottle.

please tell me what you think is going on and what we should do. fyi dd has been checked and she is perfectly healthy and is alert alot and sleeps great!

  • I'm sorry that you are going through this.  Have you tried Neosure?  That adds 22 cal per ounce.

  • well here is my experience and then my thoughts.

Between my daughters 2 mo. and 3 mo. appts she gained 27 oz, which equalled to an oz. a day and I do believe that an oz. a day is what your LO should be doing.  However, we all know that is easier said than done.

At the 2 mo. appt, I was telling (note I said telling, not asking Wink ) the nurse that I would be taking my daugther off of the addtional formula supplementation.  This was before our reflux issues really started up.  My daughter was having terrible reactions to the formula (no matter what type) which was added to the breastmilk in her bottles.  The sole purpose was to increase her calorie intake.  We scheduled a 3 month appt which included a weight check.  That is when I was told by the same nurse that she had done really well with her weight gain.  Make sense?

It was shortly after her 2 mo. appt that her reflux was out of control and we were told to start adding cereal to thicken it.  We started with Rice cereal which my daughter had issues with.  We then switched her to Oatmeal cereal and she didn't have any issues and the reflux was better.  I attribute her weight gain to the addition of the cereal.  I know that MANY will freak out over adding cereal to the bottles (due to potential allergy issues) at such a young age but when it comes to a baby that is miserable and not eating vs. a happy baby that IS gaining weight - I'd rather have the latter!

I'd say for your own health (meaning no worry) put the cereal in every bottle and see what the improvement is.  The last thing you want is to be told she has a failure to thrive.

This may also help ease your mind - my DD has never been a big eater at one setting but will eat smaller bottles more frequently, so maybe that is an option, although that can be time consuming.  My LO is a very slow eater and needs to burp frequently.

Keep up the good work mom!  Hang in there and I hope this helps.

  • Sorry you're having issues. It seems like you're doing all the right things. I do believe that so long as she's gaining you're already ahead of the game.

If the cereal was working out for her I would stick with it- changing back and forth can be hard for them too. Also, and I can imagine it's hard with two, try paying really close attention to the feedings that are outside of her average (a lot more or a lot less) as they can give you clues into your DD's feeding habits. DD would always eat more if she had a clean diaper (even though I would inevitably need to change it right after her feeding also) and had just woken up from a nap. She also ate more (for whatever reason) when my husband fed her. So we went with her cues until she was established in a better eating routine. while she was never a bad eater we really wanted eating to be an enjoyable experience for her, so whatever she wanted/needed to get that extra little bit of formula in her she got until she hit about 12lbs and then we started more of a schedule/routine.

  • If it was me - I'd look into switching to something like Prevacid instead of continually upping the Zantac. I'd also ask about switching to higher-calorie formula like Enfacare or Neosure, both of which come at 22cal/oz (20cal/oz is normal) and can be mixed for an even higher calorie count. But that's just because that's what we did and what worked for us. GL!

Ditto switching meds. DS was a horrible eater for the first 3 months of his life and I stressed about it constantly. We finally got the right med and dosage figured out and he eats like a champ now. I also found that he did much better on exclusively breastmilk than with fortifying with formula. He gained weight faster on the breastmilk because he ate better than he would with the fortified milk.

ETA: Sorry. You didn't say if they were breastmilk or FF, so disregard my last statement.
