Poll: alliterative names?

You know: Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Robert Redford (uh, Willy Wonka?). Do you and DH automatically throw out first names that have the same first letter as your last name? Or do you keep some and not others based on sound?

DH and I were hotly debating a few names that start with H, same as our last name, and have been having fun trying to figure out why sometimes it works and sometimes...not so much. I got curious. Thoughts?

Re: Poll: alliterative names?

  • It honestly doesn't bother me, but for some people it's bothersome. For my family, however, it's out of the question as our last name begins with P.

  • For boys, I have two names that would be alliterative. Different initials for the middle name, though.

I'm alliterative (all 3 names), so I guess it's what I'm used to and I like it.

  • I don't think alliteration automatically makes a name bad if there is variety in the syllables of the names.

  • I think it is fine. I wouldn't let that stop me.
  • It's fine. I had an alliterative name with my maiden name and no one ever said anything to me about it.
  • I'm S.S. so I wouldn't be opposed to it. I think it works sometimes and doesn't work others and you just need to say it out loud.

  • doesn't bother me at all.

sometimes i think alliteration makes the name (first and last combo) sound stronger...in a good way :)

  • I like alliterative names but I've crossed them off my list... I'm not sure why.

    Interesting question.

  • I did not automatically throw them out. Some of them sounded great - sort of like a "could be famous name." We ultimately did not use any of those names but they weren't ruled out because of the same first letter/sound.
  • I think you take it on a name by name basis. Our son is Colin--and our last name starts with a "K." I don't think it sounds funny. But I couldn't do Connor or Carter--because our last name also ends in an "-er" sound.

  • I don't have a problem with alliterative names.  I wouldn't cross a name off my list for that reason but I wouldn't go out of my way to choose an alliterative name either.
  • I've dismissed them because DH's last name is P, and I will never give a child the initials PP.

  • I actually really don't like them.  I'm not sure why, I've just never been a fan of the way it sounds.

  • I think it depends on the initial.  I agree with those who talked about PP.  That would be bad.  My last name is "O".  I liked OO as initials - kind of James Bond-ish.  DH was totally against it.  Too bad, Olivia O had a really nice ring to it!

  • I had an alliterative name growing up and hated it... I was never called by my first name or even a nickname, always first and last together. Now that I'm married, my first and last name RHYME, and I'm not sure which is worse. :P I tried hard to avoid alliterative names for our kids, but our first name for a girl starts with the same letter as our last name... it's the only one I loved that DH didn't veto. Not that it matters- I think we are having a boy.
