Trying to Get Pregnant

So confused! How is this possible?

So. I have been a good little newb. Lurking, FF tutorials, TCOYF on hold at the library... then yesterday my friend drops a bomb on me that takes everything I *think* I've learned and turns it upside down. She is pregnant... and SWEARS she conceived during period.

I'll spare you the story in its entirety, but basically she claims that in September they were on vacay, and had sex ONLY on days 1 & 2 of her AF. (gross IMO, but whatever floats your boat.) She states they did not have sex again until a few weeks later, AFTER they were home and she had all ready figured out she was KU.

Not that I think my friend is a liar... but I am so confused after everything I have been learning about the importance of an appropriate LP. How is conceiving DURING your period possible...?

Re: So confused! How is this possible?

  • It is possible that what she thought was AF was really just spotting that many women get during early pregnancy?  has she been in to have the pregnancy dated?  I'm guessing she further along than she thinks.

  • How did she figure she was all ready pregnant? Maybe she had bleeding that she thought was AF but wasn't, so was actually pregnant prior to.
  • She should name her baby Jesus!

  • I think they cover this in TCOYF. Basically sperm can live for up to five days, so it is possible in women who have very short cycles. In your friend's case, she would have had to O only a few days after her period, but I guess it's possible.

  • It probably wasn't really her period. It was probably heavy spotting (perhaps the elusive implantation spotting?). Just nod and smile when people like that try to give you ttc advice.

    ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahha!!!!

  • LOL I know I know I know.... all questions I asked.

I didn't want to type out the entire story... but some of the details are so important..... She swears that this was a regular period, and that her & her DH had not even been having sex for awhile up until their vacay (part of the reasons for it in the 1st place. Recapture the spark or whatever.)

They went on this trip over Labor Day weekend. Had sex, yadda yadda yadda, got home, no sex, and the end of September she was not feeling great and her sister encouraged her to take an HPT. It was positive, doc visit early October, and she is just now telling people.

CRAZY, right!?!? Seriously. I was up half the night trying to figure how this could be.

  • My guess is she probably got pregnant her previous cycle and when she was having her "period" it was either implantation bleeding or just regular spotting from being early in the pregnancy.

Also, some women (VERY RARE) Have ovulation bleeding.

Once she has an U/S and they can measure the baby and know how many weeks she actually is, she might see that she probably conceived a few weeks prior to when she thought.

  • There are so many different things that could have happened. Don't throw everything you've learned out the window- you need to O to get pregnant and O'ing during your period is really unlikely. Some people spot when they O, maybe she thought it was her period? Why is she including when she conceived when telling people she's pregnant? Unless you asked for that info... When she sits with her doc to figure out how far along she is, I bet she'll be told a different story/conception time.

I don't think she's telling everyone. It was a private conversation between her & I. Part of the reason she was telling me (this part makes me sick too) is that it has been a known fact they did not really want kids, and she was suprised she had conceived during her period. But like I said, I don't think the timeline is part of the story she is telling everyone.

  • Sperm can live in your for awhile... maybe tmi, but when I got pregnant with DD, exH and I did not have sex often, we had sex 1 time that month and I know that it was on a Tuesday, however when I went to my first ultrasound, they said I conceived her on the following Saturday. Maybe she had a short cycle or Oed early? Anyways, I agree that I would just nod and tell her congrats!

  • I had a friend that had this same scenario happen too. I brought it up to my dr. yesterday (along wtih my dozen other questions) when I went for my annual and she said that in rare cases, some people cramp so badly during AF, that their ovary actually releases an egg. Given this info, it would be possible for the egg to be fertilized and implant just after AF.
  • Sounds like there is more to this story than she's telling you. I would let it go if I were you, because my guess is you don't want to know.

  • Wow. Thanks for all the insight, everyone. Just have been SO confused to learn this in the midst of everything else I am trying to learn... but I am going to try not to give it too much more thought anymore! Just going to file in under "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm" and keep on at mine & DH's own journey! Wink

Good idea, because as someone said, there's more ot it than she's telling you. Why should would tell you what you've shared and not something else, I have no idea, but something seems to be missing.
