Preemies

Intro and Questions (sorry Long)

Hello Ladies,

I am also a preemie mom. DS was born at 34 weeks due to PROM. He was 7 lbs 14 ozs and 21 inches long. He was in the NICU for a week.

Now I am facing having another preemie baby.
I was admitted Thursday and released Friday for pre term labor. We got things to stop by using Terbitaline and Procardia. So I was sent home. Monday I had an appointment with my doctor and started having contractions again. I was sent to be monitored again and was admitted again. They had put me on Magnesium for 24 hours to stop the labor and it worked. The side effects of the medicine were some of the worse in the world but it got it to stop. I have been off of the Mag since 11 yesterday afternoon and things have been relatively calm. A couple of contractions but nothing steady. I just saw the dr and they will let me go home today. At 70 % and 2 CM.  If something happens this weekend we are going to end up taking the baby.

I'm kind of nervous about being at home on no meds. The baby had the lungs shots and we have done everything we can to get this little one ready. My Dr. is not in town this weekend but the Drs that are on call are the high risk OB's.  They sat down with me this morning and told me thier plan and reasoning. Also the DR on call in the NICU this weekend is the same Dr that took care off DS. So that makes me feel a little better.

Have any of you had experiances with pre term labor. What were your out comes. How long had labor been prolonged since you were taken off of your meds?

Re: Intro and Questions (sorry Long)

  • I know someone with a similar story who went to term. I guess everyone's different, but  many T&P to you and I hope you can keep that baby in!!!

  • I went into PTL at 34w4d. They told me they didn't stop labor after 34w (for various reasons I only learned later). I did not get steroid shots and had no idea to even ask for them.

I had DS at 34w5d. His lungs weren't ready at all, and he was on CPAP for 2 days, then intubated for a little over a day and given surfactant, then moved back to CPAP for another day and a half. After those first five days of breathing issues, we worked on feeding, and he was discharged at the end of day 15. His breathing issues were somewhat uncommon for his gestational age.

Your history with LO#1 suggests maybe this LO will have great weight for his/her age again. Plus you got the steroid shots, so hopefully if your baby debuts soon he/she will be ready to breathe on their own and just have to work on feeding. I hope your baby keeps cooking for a few more weeks! GL!

  • I went into pre-term labor at 29w, 6d due to severe hemorrhaging from a placental abruption. I was already in the hospital due to the bleeding, was hooked up to contraction monitors, and had gotten my first steroid shot that morning. The hemorrhaging caused me to start having contractions and within a half hour my water broke. A quickie ultrasound revealed that I had no fluid left, so I ended up having an emergency c-section and delivering Corri within 2 hours of contractions starting.

In your case, you were lucky enough to get both steroid shots, and you are a few weeks further ahead than I was, both of which will likely make a HUGE difference. Our neonatologist said that I was lucky in that I passed the 28 week milestone, but that making it to at least 32 weeks cuts down significantly on the chance of major problems. FWIW, Corri is a normal and healthy almost 9 month old (actual age) with no developmental delays, so keep that in mind.

Good luck to you, and I will keep my fingers crossed that your LO keeps cooking for another few weeks!

  • Thanks for the reassurance Ladies. It's hard to beleve that I may have to go to the NICU again.  I was just hoping for a "normal " pregnancy and having the "normal" experiance of having your baby with you in your room and not having to run to the NICU every two hours to nurse. Most important I would like LO to be healthy.  I'm just going to count each day in me baking as a blessing and be ready for whenever the time comes.
  • Welcome! Sorry you are going through this again. There are a few moms on here who have had successful term pregnancies with the help of terb and bedrest. I hope you can stay pregnant for as long as possible! GL and keep us updated!

  • I'm dealing w/ pPROM now and read that Vitamin C and D can help prolong pre-term pregnancies. I've been taking those everyday so I hope this can help
