My husband and I were mulling names over last night for our future baby. The name I liked the most for a girl was Saoirse. I had a very close Irish friend named Saoirse. My question is, if you saw this name would you be able to pronounce it? How would you pronounce it?
Re: How do YOU pronounce Saoirse?
I have no idea.
I guess if I had to try and pronounce it, I'd say it like So-airs

"SEAR-sha" or "SOAR-sha".
Wow...I was closer than I thought. I figured it was similar to Sasha but didn't know how to pronounce it. I feel pretty god that I know Siobhan is pronounced "sha-von". (Even before the AI girl.)
Yeah, I wasn't even close, I would have totally butchered it!
Thank you for correcting me.
I think it's a gorgeous name. I love love love Irish and Gaelic names. In fact, our dog's middle name is Ciormin, which means "soft ridge" (she had a wrinkly head when we got her).
But.
I could never in a million years create that headache for my child.
Great book. I thought that girl did well. I forgot her name was Saoirse.
So-air-see
or Sore-a-see -
Your way of pronouncing is nice... I'd forget how to pronounce it though...
Nice. I guess I shouldn't have named my son Oisin then? Pronounced OSH-een?
Seer-shuh of course ;-)
I love Irish names though and this is at the top of my list for newbie!

Cultural does not equal weird. And I suppose you pity my poor child for his name.
i think it's a beautiful name - but i would never name my child something that difficult to pronounce (or even spell- as you have shown us... you didn't even spell a name you love properly- think of how badly it will be spelled the whole child's life).
Are you Irish? I esp think it's odd when people use Irish names and they aren't Irish, even a little bit... not sure if you are.
I worked with a Siobhan many years ago (did i spell it right?). It was so annoying how people screwed her name up- OVER and over - even after they learned the right way to say it... there's just no way to remember that kind of stuff- b/c NOTHING in the name spelling helps the average person in the US to be able to say it properly. I think it hurt her career, actually - you'd hear higher ups saying things about her name, making little jokes, etc - i don't think they took her seriously b/c they simply couldn't say her name right. Not good/wise of them for sure- but still - a weird name is rarely good professionally.
My husband's side of the family is. Me, no I am not at all. I know how to spell the name however my dyslexia did get in the way. As for it not "looking" professional. Well, that made me laugh. Thank you for your honesty anyhow.
wow. rude.
