2nd Trimester

measureing small has me a little concerned, i'm NOT a small girl!!!

I started off this pregnancy in a size 16.  I have gained 24 lbs, at 26 weeks.  I'm 5ft, 10 inches tall, I'm NOT a small person!  When I went in today for my 26 week visit, I was measureing 24-25.  I have never in all my pregnancies measured small!!!   My dr. isn't worried about it and I asked if I should have a sono to check on the baby.  She said that if I'm still measuring small at my next appt. then she will order a sono.  UGH!!!

I'm trying really hard not to let this worry me too much!  Trying to keep the faith in my dr, but it's hard.   I didn't mention that I lost over 110 lbs 2 years ago and have never been this small in any of my pregnancies.  I don't know, maybe that might have something to do with it???  She said if I was 10 inches shorter, then she would worry.  But because I"m so tall, she's not too concerned.  Also, she said she was very low in my pelvis, which I know to be true because she's constantly kicking  my pubic bone!

Anyone else???

  • Fundal heights are estimates - rough estimates at best.  And 1cm difference is really nothing in the grand scheme of things.  Baby's position can make a huge difference.

FWIW, I'm also 5'10" and always measured a tad behind with my last pregnancy - if you have a lot of torso, baby has more room to "hide".  Everyone predicted no more than a 7 pound baby since I seemed so "small" - yet kiddo was born the day before his due date at 8lb6oz.

    So basically, I wouldn't worry a bit ;-)

  • My belly is measuring 2 weeks ahead, but Nugget is only measuring 2 days ahead on the u/s.

  • I?m worried too. I?ll see tomorrow at my next ultrasound. I was measuring two weeks behind according to weight ? I?m having fairly major iron issues (one of the outcomes in low birth weight).

  • You are measuring right on target. There is a standard variation for fundal height and you fall within it. Plus, you are just barely within the timeline when FH starts to be accurate. I wouldn't worry at all.

  • Thanks guys, and one thing I just remembered.  She hasn't even used a measuring tape on me yet!!!  She's really just guestamating!  When I was at the OB that is doing my c-section 2 weeks ago, he measured me 2 weeks ahead.  So I guess I won't freak out yet!

    Thanks so much!

If your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. You are measuring one week behind, which isn't a big deal. I've measured behind one week, ahead the next and then normal the week after that.  I mean, someone is just taking a ruler to your belly, it's not like you are having an ultrasound and the kid is measuring super behind.

    Just relax.

    thats true!!!!!  thanks!

  • My SIL was huge with her first 2 pregnancies.  The last was completely diff.  I don't think they knew the baby would be 8lbs until he was born.  She just carried him differently.  They were also wrong about the estimated due date.  She was further along than they thought.  Sometimes they have to estimate size/weight/date... but if something was seriously wrong, they would know.  If the doc says it's fine, then you should try not to worry.  I hope this helps.  Good luck!
  • It really does, thank you so much ;) !!!!!!

  • My DS measured small my entire pregnancy and I was so worried.  I had to have about 4 extra u/s's.  He did come out a bit smaller than average but he was 100% healthy with no problems.  As pp's said, fundal height is just an estimate and they're just being cautious.  Try not to worry about it!  I think it's very common to measure small/big.

This. Measuring 2 weeks ahead or behind is in the normal range. I measured 2 weeks behind at my 24w appt, but my dr isn't worried about it right now because that's still in the normal range, and I also measured small with DS. I was measuring 4 weeks behind with him at 36w, and they did a growth sono and they said everything was fine, he just may be on the small side. He came out 7lbs and 7oz. So not tiny!
