Naming after grandparents

Are any of you naming your kids after your parents?

Is it going to be a contentious issue which grandparent?

It had never occurred to me to name my kids after any of the grandparents, but I really like my dad's first name with my last name. But I don't know if ILs would be offended, especially because DH was named after his grandfather. I dislike FIL's first name enough that I wouldn't even want to middle name it.

Re: Naming after grandparents

  • I vote that you can name your child whatever you want :)  your ILs shouldn't be offended, they get the last name, so your family can have the first name!

  • DH and I are going to use parents' middle names as middle names for our LOs. Our first daughter will have my mom's middle name as her middle name and our son will have my dad's. Then, the second boy or girl will have his mom and dad's. The way I look at it is, they already have his parents' last name. I know that's kinda silly, but their name will live on somehow..my parents' won't. I hope that doesn't seem selfish. Embarrassed

  • I don't want to name our kids after either of our parents, but we have considered naming them after our grandparents.  DH's grandfather and both of our dad's are named John.  DH would like to name a son that, but I feel like there are enough John LN already.  Not to mention John is a pretty popular name.  We have also considered DH's grandmother's name, which is Miriam.

  • The names I'm favoring are from my grandparents- Sul was my dad's dad and I'd like to name a boy Sullivan, and my mom's mom was Betty, so Elisabeth. My dad's mom is still around, so I'd feel weird naming a baby after her, and my mom's dad was Clifford, which I don't love. We'll maybe use a family name from DH's side for a middle name, but I figure the kid already has their last name, so that's fair enough.

  • For a girl we're giving her a middle name from my family, and for a boy we're giving a middle name from DF's family.  We have a different situation since it's twins and we can give each a family name, but if it was a single pregnancy we'd just be saying that we'd give the second child the other family name and I think that would appease everyone.  Look girl names on his side of the family and see if you like any for middle names.

This is also a good point :-)

  • Well we decided if it was a boy we would give him my FIL middle name, so it will be Logan Jeffrey.

If it is a girl I want to name her after my Grandpa's sister, Carmella and then her middle name will be Marie (which is my middle name, my mom's middle name and DH grandma's middle name)

On my side of the family all the boys first names are Charles then they go by their middle name. My brothers are Charles Anthony and Charles Nicholas, but they go by Nick and Tony, but I figure since I have 2 brothers who can carry on that tradition with my family's last name its not my responsibility to name our child Charles.

Great minds think alike! This was also part of my answer!

Yes, I think this is an excellent point Smile

  • Our son is named after DH's dad (middle name is Robert), his dad passed away when he was 8 and it was important to him.

If this one is a boy, he'll be named after my dad (middle name will be Doyle) and if its a girl, she'll be named after my grandma (middle name will be Sarah).

  • I plan to use my Mom's middle name if I have a DD because she's deceased.  If my MIL is offended I really don't care.

DH wants to use his Dad's fn as a mn and use DH's fn as a DS name but I'm not wild about it.

Luckily we have 30+ weeks to decide :)

  • DH is a 4th and we already told my IL's that there will not be a 5th. But, with that being said, my mom's dad died when she was 13 so, I never knew my grandfather on that side. I'd like to name my son after him (Russell) but, that's really the only family name I'd use. And I agree with PP, your IL's can't be irriated for you using a family name, your child will get their last name so, it only seems fair that you pick whatever you want, guilt free.
  • My dad, and his dad are both Bob's and so is DH Grandfather.  DH's Fathers name is James I really like Robert James LN but it would be a Rob instead of Bob

  • Brianna's middle name is Lynn which is my & my mothers middle names. Camden's middle name is James which is my dad & my brothers first name, also fils first name & bils middle name.

This baby if its a boy will most likely be William (nn Liam) Jeffrey, J's grandfather & then his first name. If its a girl I have no idea what she will be named, but we will try to find another family name.

  • Are any of you naming your kids after your parents? No.

But we will probably use DH's grandpa's names as middle names. Neither of our families are really big into naming after family members, although DS's MN is in honor of my brother.
