I think girl when I hear it. I guess it could be used for a boy, but it's far less common (according to the social security baby name stats). Also, Harper Lee the author is a famous namesake, who is a female.
Girl. The other night my friend's friend stopped by. I had never met her but I knew her kids were named Lily and Harper. So I asked, how old are your girls? She goes, well I have one boy and one girl. Lily is 5 and Harper is 3.
Awkward. I definitely believe Harper is a girl's name.

That is awkward, but I can guarantee you are one of the many people who will mistake her son for a girl.
traditionally a boy's name, i think it's more popular as a girl's name these days (esp here on the bump). incidentally, i LOVE it for a girl and it's on our list if we have another girl.
Unisex, but that's only because of the massive influx of little girl Harpers this last few years. It's a literary name, but I don't think half of the namers using it even know that connection. So, on an older guy it doesn't seem out of place to me. On a little one, I would assume girl unless you told me boy. If you adore it for a boy, I'd middle name it. There's something really sad about being a boy named X in a school full of girls named, X too. And this is the argument against boys names on girls. You can't really take it back.
I don't think this is one of those names that has just recently switched to a girl's name - I think it's in the girl camp because of Harper Lee, as PP mentioned.

May 2015 signature challenge for January: "You had ONE job!"
When I was pregnant 4 years ago, this was the name I picked if we had a girl. After author Harper Lee. My husband was on board, it was a go. At that time, when I asked about it on a name board (similar to this one but apparently not around anymore) it was a boy's name that nobody liked. HA!
A few weeks before my baby was born I switched my choice to Matilda, mostly because I was worried it would be too trendy in the future. My husband reluctantly agreed.
We ended up having a boy. This time around (I'm 21 weeks) my husband pushed for Harper. I just can't do it. I can't believe the influx of little girl Harpers in the last 4 years. So we're going with Alice (so far.)
Thanks guys....incidently, i'm not in America (i don't know if that makes a difference) and have never met another child called Harper. The people i've mentioned it too say "Oh, nice boys name" so i thought maybe i could get away with it. Maybe the Harper name trend on girls is yet to hit NZ!
However, i do want a name that travels well - if he decides to go to America in the future i'd hate for him to have a blatent girl name there.
I guess thats on the veto list then...DH wasnt a fan anyway.
nb: not assuming everyone here is American, but i'm guessing a fair portion? Wasnt meant to be rude anyway...

(and that reminds me of Clerks II)
