Trying to Get Pregnant

Question for those with bulldogs

I've seen quite a few of you ladies have bullys in your sig pictures so I have a question for you.

Our bulldog humps little kids.  While we don't have any kids yet...we do have several coming over for the holidays.  Plus my neice just started walking and I want her to be able to roam free around the house without getting humped by the dog.  I'm not sure why he does that, but it's only to small children.  Maybe it's b/c they're his size?  IDK.

Anyway...do you have that problem with your bulldogs?  Any tips on how to get him to stop?

Note: he is neutered.

  • Bella doesnt hump (well she did hump her sister for a little bit there but we think its b/c she was on steriods for her skin)...anyway she does jump on people.  She is really strong and knocks kids down.  We just cant get her to stop...so sadly she gets crated when shes around kids.  I know they arent the same thing, but at least I tried :):)  lol
  • I would crate him but I know he would just bark and bark all day when he hears all the people that will be over.

  • Our bulldog is almost a year old and humps ALL the time!! Its embarrassing! He seems to hump people he doesn't recognize that come into our house (or his territory). We have a small niece and nephew and don't let him around them for fear they'll get humped too...I wish I had a solution for you, but I do empathize with you!

  • We have an english bulldog, Hank who turned 1 in August.  He is also neutered and has a problem with humping.  He is especially fond of humping my 8 year old nephew and new people.  Sometimes I think its my nephew's sent and size.  When it's our friends I think it's him trying to dominate and assert himself.  As soon as he starts we pull him off and tell him no. Honestly sometimes it works and sometimes it takes a little more.  We went to obedience school and one thing we were taught was to put him on his lease and put him on the down when new people come in, wait ten minutes then let him up and interact with guests.  He gets so excited he cannot control himself.

  • Okay so if he is fixed, then I would suggest that when he starts to act up, put him in a "time out".  Our boxer will get crazy (doesn't hump) but he will start chewing no peoples toes or licking them like crazy.  I would have to take him by the collar (not drag, just lead) him over to his bed and tell him to lay down and stay.  If he stayed for about 10 minutes, I'd let him back up, but if he acted up again, back to the bed he went.  And just like any time out, if he got up before his 10 minutes was up, he'd have to go right back.

Now all I have to do is say "Go to your bed!" and he goes (usually sulks over there) and lays down until I tell him to get up.  After one time out he usually chills.

  • Humping is a "problem" for most dogs and it has nothing to do with the breed.

Puppies do it out of instinct but adult dogs do it as a sign of dominance. So you should definitely train him not to do that as the dog should never be dominant over people.

Whenever your dog jumps up to hump, go over and get him by the scruff and push him down. DON'T hit or drag him down, but do more of a steady push and say OFF. Trust me, you are not hurting him. This is the same correction a monther would do. If he starts going at it again, tell him again OFF. If he gets off by himself give him a treat and say GOOD BOY or YES. I suggest to use one "clicker" word that he'll associate with just this situation. So ie, say "yes" and then give him a treat. If he attempts to do it again but corrects himself before actually enaging, say again YES and give him a treat. That is basically your "clicker" training and he'll know that he will get rewarded for not doing it.

I've worked with trainers and dog behaviorists so I know it works :)

Key is not to yell, but still show authority and praise your dog for doing a good job. Try not to isolate him but to actually fix the problem. With consistency your dog will learn quickly and be quite happy :)

    Good luck!!!

  • BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! I laughed so hard when I read this because my bully does the same thing, except he humps air following said child while sniffing its butt. He ONLY does this to children in diapers and only if they have peed in their diaper. It's very very odd, but we always know when the diaper needs to be changed because of it lol.

However he only humps air and follows them and doesnt actually jump on the kids so it's not as big of an issue, but when he does it I grab him by the scruff and push him down (this takes all my weight so I usually have to actually lay down on him) and get him to calm down. (Also see the Ceasar the Dog Whisperer method- same thing).  It works like a charm on anything he has gone over the top with. HTH!

  • Oh yeah I wanted to add that if we have a house full of guests (like when we had about 10 people over for the super bowl) I just put a leash on him.  It makes it SO easier to grab him that way.

But I do highly suggest the time out.

The problem with bully breeds is that they do tend to get a little dominant and they are stubborn as all get out!  But they are SMART and they really do love pleasing their owners.

My boxer attacked our trainer.  I was SO embarrassed that my sweet boy was lashing around like a gremlin trying to bite him.  But he was able to get it under control while I practically hid in the back of the classroom embarrassed lol.  But it really taught me a lot!  So I would suggest getting into a training program.

And I second people talking about grabbing their scruff.  It does not hurt them but it does get their attention.

Another alternative is to get this remote thing (they sell it at pet supply stores) It makes a high pitched noise that they don't like, but its not harmful and 100% humane.  When he acts up give him a stop sound (I suggest something other then NO, something that is just his stop sound, but means NO.  Like a EH!  ACH! or something along those lines.  You hit the little button that makes the noise and it will stop him in his tracks.  He will hate it, so it won't take long to learn "If I don't hump...I don't hear that awful noise"

  • Thanks for all the advice!  It's hard to train him not to do it when there aren't little kids around more often.  But I will really try hard to correct him tomorrow when my niece is over and hopefully Christmas he will be better behaved.

Thank you all so much!  I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem either:)

I'd say between now and christmas, at least get him trained on staying on his bed and teaching him the command of "Go to your bed".  At least that way you have at least something to make him do if he gets out of hand.

We don't have people over often so thats about the only thing I can do for when he starts to get too wild.  I'm glad he doesn't hump, but the random chewing on peoples toes (its SO much worse in the summer!)  Is still pretty bad haha.
