We have a stander?

At daycare yesterday, her teacher showed me that S could stand for about 2 - 3 seconds by herself.  Yippee!  However, it freaks her out.  I'm not sure if she doesn't know what to do or is scared she is going to fall.  Did any of your LO's react the same?  Does anyone have suggestions on how to reassure her that she is okay?

Re: We have a stander?

  • i just kept a close eye on sabrina (still do) and i think that gave her the confidence and reassurance to keep trying- she could see i was there if she needed anything, kwim? hopefully if she falls it will be on her bum and no biggie. she'll probably go off of YOUR reaction so as long as you're like No Biggie, then she'll probably react the same way. and if she does take a bad spill, try to remain calm and collected and just give her big hugs and let her know that she's fine.

ack, it's SO much fun!! :)

It didn't freak M out, but she did get so excited that she would knock herself down, then she would either laugh or cry, depending on her mood.

Maybe just show enthusiam when she stands so she'll know it's a good thing. We always clapped and smiled when she fell too so she wouldn't think it was a bad thing. I think that goes a long way.

  • Thanks ladies - it was so strange.  I figured she would have loved standing, since she loves walking by holding onto our hands.  Off to give some more positive reinforcement.
  • Gracie was like that also at first. Now she just falls on her bum and laughs. I would suggest just staying close and keeping your hands near for her to grab.

And M wasn't really freaked out, he'd just look a bit startled when he realized he wasn't holding on to anything. Then he'd fall.

This. Sydney stands... until she realizes she is standing. Sometimes we count a full ten seconds or more. If she has something in her hands or is interested in something, she has no clue she is doing it.

  • Sarah also stood by herself at that age and didn't even realize it. Then, when she realized it, she'd sit down right away. So she wasn't freaked out, but just surprised.
