I don't think it's a good idea to pump before baby arrives. There's really nothing to be gained. In fact, I've read that nipple stimulation can kick your body into premature labor - not a healthy thing.
On top of that, I've heard from folks that have to pump right away for preemies that the pump gets
so little colostrum it doesn't even cover the bottom of a bottle and
you can't really save it.
If you're thinking about "toughening up" that's really an OWT. There's nothing you can do before baby arrives except educate yourself.
i had to pump after LO was born because he was in the NICU. the first time i pumped i got 10ml of colostrum because it had been built up over the course of my last tri. every time i pumped after that i got between 5 and 7ml.
if you are pumping to induce labor (only do this after 40wk, it will just cause irritable contractions that will go away if your body isnt ready to be in labor yet, and will just frustrate you.) i would suggest saving the colostrum to finger (not bottle) feed to your baby after he is born - because if you do go into labor shortly after you pump you will not have a lot of colostrum left for him.
