First, I have to thank you in advance for reading this. I could really use some help figuring out what is going on. Over the last week, my daughter has been screaming during every feeding from me. It's so upsetting because breastfeeding has been so wonderful up until now and it's turning into something negative for her and me! Here is some relevant information:
*She eats pumped milk in a bottle at daycare without any issues, so I don't think it's any food sensitivities.
* My supply did recently dip, but it's back to normal today and she's still fussy.
* Usually her first morning feeding is "fuss-free" and I attribute that to the fact that there's plenty of milk since it's been about 12 hours since her last feeding. However, this morning, she fussed just like any other feeding.
* I've tried sitting in different ways to see if she wanted to be more/less inclined and nothing seems to help.
* She will eat for about 3 minutes and then start to cry. I'll switch sides and she'll do another 3 minutes and cry again. Then all she wants is her pacifier. I'm really worried about this because I don't think she's getting enough hindmilk. Yesterday she had a greenish colored diaper that suggests this to me.
* Like I said, she wants her pacifier, so I don't think she's having any discomfort sucking.
I'm just at a loss. I'm about ready to throw in the towel and just start exclusively pumping and feeding her from a bottle, but I really enjoy breastfeeding and I don't want to do that.
Again, thanks for any help/ideas/opinions and what could be going on!
Re: Opinions/Ideas? Long
I was kind of thinking about that. She's been taking a bottle (2 bottles at daycare per day) for 2 months without any issues. Do you think she just getting used to the bottle and doesn't want to work as hard to suck from me??
Thanks so much.
I would have her ears checked, sounds like it may be an infection and it may hurt to swallow. Most BF babies don't get ear infections but it is possible. She may also be teething early.
Or it could be a change in your let down, my DD gets impatient at times when it takes a minute for milk to flow.
I'd thought of an ear infection as well, but she just had her 4 month check up on Friday and he didn't say anything about her ears. I think I'm still going to get them checked out tomorrow. At the very least, I'll get the doc's opinion on what might be going on. Ugh, this is so very nerve wracking.
It sounds like she likes the ease of the bottle: she doesn't have to work as hard as she does on the breast. I have read and been told that it takes between 2 and 3 minutes for the milk to let down, this might explain why after that time she starts to fuss. I advocate that you keep at it and when in doubt contact a LC or your local La Leche League.
