Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If your dc sits on their own...

DS can sit up on his own for as long as he wants. However, he can't get himself into a sitting position - I have to put him there. Does your dc put themselves in a sitting position? Starting at what age? He's a preemie so I always worry about developmental delays. We have his 9 month appointment with the pedi on Monday so I'll ask her too.

  • ben cant do it himself yet either.  there were kids in our library group who could already but not him.  i m not worried about it yet.

  • DD can't get herself into the sitting position yet, but I'm not really concerned b/c she's only 6.5 months. I have a feeling that milestone is a ways off. I don't remember when DS started doing it.

  • DS does it, but has only started doing so in the past week.

  • Hmm now that I look back I really have no idea when she did. I really don't remember this milestone, I am such a bad mommy. lol

  • DS can't get himself to sitting yet.  Sometimes when he's on his tummy he will turn and push up and it looks like he's going to.  But he's not really even close yet.

  • DS has been sitting on his own since he was 5.5 months old.  He just this weekend got into a sitting position on his own.  I was so excited I started to cheer and scared the crap out of him. Haha the things that make us moms happy.

  • Sarah's 7.5 months old and can sit for an extended period of time but I have to put her there, she cannot get to sitting by herself.  She did just pull herself up to a kneeling position the other day - she must have really wanted that toy in the toy basket!  Stick out tongue  I'm not sure when they can "sit" themselves...I'm guessing it's after they start crawling on all 4's? (Sarah's still army-crawling)

  • Asher started that around 6 months BUT he still won't (I'm sure he could) roll over from back to front.

    It'll come in time.

  • he sits on his own, but he didnt sit before that...  even if i tried putting him on a sitting position he would just throw himself back and didnt want to be in that position, then at 8 months he did it on his own.
  • Ben will put himself in the sitting position if he is standing.  He'll lean back and plop down on his bum.  He started doing this in the last week or two.  I'm not sure if this is what you meant or not.
  • DD sat on her own (if I put her there) around 6 months (don't remember exactly). She didn't put herself into a sitting position until she started crawling at 8 months.
  • DD didn't do that until some time between 8-9 months, so with your DS's adjusted age, I wouldn't be too concerned yet. ?Are you helping him learn how to do it? ?I showed DD a few times by motoring her through it and then one morning we found her sitting and she's done it ever since.
  • My DS is the same age and he too can't get into a sitting positin, although he tries to get into a crawling position and sometimes he is able to get on his knees and hands, although he can't crawl yet. We just had the 9 mo appointment and my pedi wasn't concerned with Alex's development. He actually only asked if he is sitting and whether he is pulling up (which he isn't).
  • dd didn't start pulling herself up into a sitting position until she was about 10 months.  she also didn't start crawling until she was 10 months.
  • No putting herself into sitting position. We always have to do it. DD also refuses to roll in either direction. I think she likes being carted around like a pretty, pretty princess.

  • My DS just learned to crawl and pull into a sitting position from laying last week. So right at 9 months. Now that he has figured out how to sit from laying (flips to his tummy and gets to all fours), he won't stop. Naps and sleep have become a nightmare because he doesn't want to lay down. I wouldn't worry and certainly don't hurry it up IMHO!

  • DD can pull herself up to sitting position.  She doesn't do it reliably or regularly but she can do it.

One time she pulled herself up into sitting position, grabbed my cell phone off the side table, and called a couple dozen people before I caught her.  At 3 am.

The whole "pulling self up into sitting position" milestone is way overrated.

  • DS just started doing that within the last couple of days.
  • When dd was 6 mos, she started doing baby sit-ups from the lying position. About a week after that, she started going from crawling to sitting. I swear she's going to be a bodybuilder.
