I'm feeding DS breast milk in a bottle. He's had a cold/cough for two weeks now. For the last week is has been a struggle to get him to drink anything. With offering him his bottle constantly, I can maybe get him to eat about 20oz in a day. He used to be happy to take 30oz plus two meals a day. Anyway, I have cut back on the amount of solid foods he gets because I don't want him to fill up on bananas when he's barely drinking anything as it is. He's a good sized baby - at least 20lbs and chubby so he's definitely not wasting away, but I do worry that he is going to get dehydrated. What do you guys think? Should I be worried if he's only getting 20oz a day (including what I'm mixing into his solid food). Do you think this is likely happening because he's teething? Aside from his lack of appetite, he seems to be his normal self in terms of energy, though he is crankier than usual and waking up crying in the night (but then refusing the bottle). I realize this is a lengthy post, so thanks for reading, and I welcome any comments you might have about our situation.
Re: my 8 month old won't drink?
Babies need about 12 oz/day for hydration reasons. Just make sure he isn't acting lethargic and has at least one wet diaper in 12 hours. Teething and colds can both affect their eating. You are doing the right thing by cutting back on solids.
If it makes you feel any better, my daughter has struggled with feeding aversions her whole life and hasn't eaten more than 19 oz in about 6 months. She has never been dehydrated. He should be just fine once he starts feeling better. Good luck!
