I'm getting nervous! My shower is on the 5th and only a few things have been purchased so far. I know most people cut it close, but I guess I'm a little nervous with this weekend being so busy at the stores and items possibly being out of stock.
On a side note, my MIL bought us our car seat and it's going to be delivered in a few days! I am so absolutely happy that she bought it for us!
Re: How close to your shower were items purchased?
I had seen some items off my registry were bought the same day as my shower and even in the past two days. I didn't get barely anything at my shower on Sunday, but that was due to the fact that items were being shipped to my house.
One Aunt bought us our car seat (yay!) and my other Aunt bought us a ton of stuff including the crib mattress (yay!). I'm happy that I got a lot of stuff from the registry.
5lbs 9 oz, 18.5 inches long
6 months: 16lbs 15 oz, 27 inches long
I can vouch for that. I worked at Target for 3 years in high school between cashiering and at the Guest Services counter. I couldn't believe how many cashiers AND shoppers were so laid back about it. It was very common to hear things like "oh, well who else is going to buy it?" or "she can just take it back".
I think there were 2 or 3 things top that showed as purchased before both of my showers. I was pretty nervous too, but it turned out we received a ton of things off of the registries (BRU and Amazon). I just had to manually go back and mark them as purchased.
Yay for a car seat. Ours was a gift too and very much appreciated!
I'd say mostly in the week to ten days prior to my shower? I wouldn't worry too much about things being out of stock though, honestly. I mean, for all people talk about the phenomenal deals they get on black friday, I rarely hear about the amazing deal Sue got on that bumbo seat, or the outrageous price Joe saw on those bottles, kwim? Black Friday tends to be insane for toys and electronics - and retailers stock the he!l up in prep for it.
My take on timing for this shower, hypothetically of course, is that if I were going to a shower on 12/5, I would be planning to go to BRU (or Target, or wherever) after work sometime next week when the Holiday dust has settled. Also, for a Sunday shower, the day before (Saturday) screams "perfect shopping time" for some people.

Excellent points.
When I was at the dinner for Bill's aunt on Sunday we were all discussing shopping this weekend and the general consensus among his aunts was that they were staying the he!l away from stores this weekend. It's very likely that they'll head out on Saturday or even Sunday morning before the shower to do their shopping.
I know! So frustrating! Bill and I were just saying how annoying that is!
Unrelatedly of course, but I'm sure that if someone bought me an item using Amazon and got a better price and I happened to get a duplicate from someone else that it wouldn't be a problem to return the duplicate to the store. I had tried to explain this whole concept to my MIL about having items listed on both Amazon and BRU and taking them off as they were purchased, but it created more drama than it was even worth.
This is why I registered at Amazon.com. The Canadian Babies R Us is super expensive with not much selection, so I registered at Amazon.
Through the Universal Amazon registry, I chose as many reasonably priced items from BRU Canada as I could. Then if there was something more specific I wanted that they didnt sell, or something was cheaper at Target or something, then I chose it from stores online.
I was thinking that people will see that they can buy the items anywhere and mark them as "purchased elsewhere"
So I dont know if it confused people or they didnt even look, but only one item has been puchased so far - and my shower is this weekend!
(Slaps forehead) - Anyways, I have almost everything I need, these items will just be bonuses. I just hope I dont get any more clothes or washcloths.
It's funny, because I used to be all weird about bargain hunting for people's gifts (i have no idea why). Now though - I'm 8,000% sure that a new mom would totally understand why I used another website to get their desired item cheaper. I don't feel bad doing it to people who are registered at BRU because it really is pretty easy to return things to BRU as long as you're positive those things are sold there.
The one thing I would never do though is buy something "just like" the thing someone registered for. DH doesn't get this at all. We were looking for something off "someone's" registry and the store was sold out, but a different brand was available. He just couldn't get on board with why I refused to buy it. I say if someone registers for something specific, you buy them THAT ONE or you don't buy it at all.

This is true for me too, I kind of stalked mine the week or so leading up to both of our showers & got 2x's as much stuff at the showers. I think a lot of our guests went the morning of the shower. It was kind of nice to be surprised!
YES! The sterling silver Lenox pasta bowl we received for our wedding was totally not like the Mikasa china vegetable bowl I registered for
Oh well, it has been a great laugh for us... a pasta serving set for a couple that can't eat pasta! It's sort of the same thing as buying a candy dish for a diabetic. We still have it, and I refuse to get rid of it. I'm sure there will be someone who can use it eventually!
In terms of online (Amazon and CD registry): stuff was still going off up to a few days before.
For stuff in the store: the day of the shower was the biggest leap on that registry.

I agree! I researched things like bouncer, bottles, stroller, etc and made my decisions based on reviews, safety ratings, and my needs.
My cousin emailed me this morning asking....
You want me to stick to the list in terms of gift buying or is branching out ok?
Ummmmm..how do I even answer this? .......I registered for a reason!
LOL what did you say? Hey at least she is asking right?
Eek! I would say something like this...
For the registry I really researched things and made my decisions based on reviews, safety ratings, and my needs. That said, I'll gladly welcome any gift that anyone generously shares with our family!

Exactly. I told her anything she wants is fine. We have that kind of relationship. She was most likely looking for guidance. I told her if I had to choose something, that Sofie the Giraffe would be a good choice. She seemed relieved.
My shower is on Saturday - and I'm REALLY hoping this happens!!!
