Petit Mal/Absence Seizures?

Does anyone have any experience with these? I think my son may be having them. I scheduled a doctors appt for Wednesday, but I don't know if I am overreacting or if these truly could be seizures.

Last night while DH was cleaning him off in his highchair, he started staring downwards with his eyes almost shut. This is totally not in his character as he usually fights getting cleaned up. After a few seconds we started shouting his name and for a good 20-30 seconds he didn't respond. Then he just started acting normal again. Then as my husband was picking him up out of the chair, he did it again but this time for only a matter of about 5-10 seconds. It bothered me enough that I started looking into it and after watching a few youtube videos, it seems like this might be a seizure. He did it again twice today but not nearly as long.

I hope I am freaking out over nothing and that he is just acting weird - which he does sometimes lol. Just thought I would see if anyone had any personal experience with these that could help me figure out if what I saw was a seizure or not. TIA!

  • I dont know much about them but my friend's son is suspected to have them.  They are sending him for an EEG in a couple of weeks.  He is almost 2 and was having episodes where he appeared drunk.

If your pedi thinks they are seizures, I would suspect they will do an EEG and treat with meds.  Keep us posted! I hope it turns out to be nothing.

  • Hi,

We had focal seizures at birth--which the doctor took VERY seriously, thank goodness. I won't get into all the gory details, but they were indicative of something very wrong. (Not to scare you. This is just what happened to us.)

I don't want to sound the alarm bell, or anything, but I'd be taking my guy to the ER IMMEDIATELY if he had another seizure...Petit Mal seizures are different, but if I suspected one, I wouldn't wait (just my opinion) . Also, I would write down when and how long each suspected seizure has lasted, and bring the info with you.

I'm sure that there are other moms here who have specific experience with these types of seizures, and will give you some solid advice.

Good luck, and please update when you have more info.

  • Just a recent lurker...but I would try to videotape it and see your Dr. My daughter has been having these as well as drop seizures. We are still in the process of trying to get a dx but your description sounds like my DD's absence ones but our videotape helped the Dr. greatly.

  • Our LO had a series of grand mal seizures, and we took him to the ER. It was helpful because he had one in the ER again, so medical pros could witness it and admit him. He had a CT, MRI and EEG within 48 hours.

Also, many children who are not on spectrum have epilepsy.

  • I would agree with some of the other posters and try to get an episode on video.  It really helped my doc diagnose as well.

  • Agree with the pp's of trying to get a video and keeping a log of each incident.  My DD started having seizures at 2 wks.  They would start out very subtle.  At 1st I wasn't even 100% sure they were seizure but I just knew something was wrong and seizure was the best word I had to describe them.  Definitely trust your instincts and I would schedule an appt with your ped.  They will likely refer you to a pediactric neurologist who will want to do an EEG.  Keep in mind though that unless your LO has an actual seizure during the EEG or has a condition that will show abnormal on the EEG you can get "normal" EEG results even though your LO is having seizures.  All of my LOs tests have always come back as normal.  Now it is possible that your LO is not having seizures.  I still scrutinize every blank stare and twitch that my DD has even though the medication has seemed to keep her seizures under control... and she definitely has them.  Again I think the best thing to do is trust your instincts.
