This is getting exhausting. Any advice?

Bryce usually is a great sleeper. But for the past week or so, he has not gone to sleep unless we rock him or hold/bounce him in our arms. We get him to sleep and lay him in his crib. As soon as we walk out of his bedroom he starts crying. We try to let him CIO, but he gets in such a crying fit that he starts to cough and gag.

So we go back in and do it all over again. Two nights ago, this went on for two.frickin.hours. Last night, we tried again to let him CIO, and he got so worked up that he coughed and gagged again. I picked him up and his little heart was racing, he was sweaty and red, and he wouldn't calm down.. so I think CIO is out of the question now.

Any advice or input? I don't think he's teething, but maybe. I know he has a clean diaper, clean PJ's, his lovey, etc., so I don't know what else it could be. Maybe he's just being a little clingy right now and senses that we are leaving the room?

  • Have you tried giving him tylenol/motrin before bed?  If it is teething pain, that should help.  It was the only way my boys would go to sleep on their own when they were teething.

  • I wish I had some advice but I don't. Hopefully it's just a phase that passes quickly? I'm sorry :(
  • We've been there too and it is beyond frustrating.  For us though, DD had always been a bad sleeper and we believed she just didn't want to be rocked anymore.  We did CIO as she wouldn't fall asleep in our arms, just got mad.  I wouldn't even call it CIO as it took maybe one night of her talking/whining for a few minutes and putting herself to sleep.

Now, ideas for you.  Are you sure his bedtime isn't too early/late? Maybe try playing around with that and see if it helps.  Maybe he's just not tired enough when he's put down for bed.

Does your DS have any molars yet? DD's bothered her before I could see or feel anything.  Maybe try Tylenol one night and see if it helps (or Orajel if you don't want to do Tylenol).

That's all I got for you and I hope you come up with a solution too.

  • Luke is an amazing sleeper like Bryce, but I know that the couple of times this has happened to us it's totally been teething related.  So when he won't calm down, I'll let him lay in the crib and if I just sit in his rocking chair and he can see me, that's helped him calm down in the past.  Because I've had the same problem, where I'll rock him, and the minute I put him down, he wakes up.  So now if he's having a bad night like that, I'll just stay in the room with him and that seems to help.
  • Lucas is going through this phase right now too.  We've been laying him down in the bed and just keeping a hand on him (very lightly) until we think he falls asleep, then we remove our hand and stand there for a two or three more minutes and then we walk out.  I prefer this to the rocking/laying down/crying repeat method, which I've done for up to 90 minutes.

Now that you mention it, his bedtime could be too late. He doesn't even start to act tired until about 9:00, and that's when this whole routine starts. Two nights ago he didn't go to bed until 11:15. :( Maybe I'll start his bed time routine sooner. Thanks!
