I'm going back to school 2 nights/week and will need to have the sitter over from 6pm to 10:15pm (10:30 at the latest). She's 16, almost 17 so I don't have to pay too well, if you know what I mean. The care will be from my home.
p.s. I pay her guardian $200/week for regular daycare (45 hours/week). I'm not sure if that matters.
p.p.s. My son goes to bed around 8pm. After 8pm she'll be able to do homework, etc. All I expect from her from 6pm-8pm is to play with and pay attention to my son. Maybe a bath if she feels like it, but it's not a requirement of mine. I'll be feeding him dinner before I leave for school at 6pm.

Re: Clicky: How much would you pay babysitter 2nights/week?
4 hours a night = 8 hours per week
8x $10 and hour is $80 a week. I think you might be able to get by on $60 a week. Even though he is sleeping two of those hours it is still her time and you still have to pay her accordingly.

And I picked $40/week. Have you used her in the past? How much do you pay her on a normal night? Per hour?
Just click "view results" under the clicky
Oops! I've never noticed that!
I've used her in the past. I've given her $30 for 4 hours (it was a weekend I had to work) and $10 for 1 hour so I could go grocery shop in peace. I wouldn't give her $8 or $10/hour on a regular basis. I was thinking more like $5/hour for this regular job.
Someone said $20 a week! Seriously?
I don't know a single 16-17 year old who would work for $5 an hour or less.
I agree with this. I also remember being nickeled and dimed as a babysitter and don't want to do that to my sitters.
When I was 14-15 I was paid $8/hour to babysit 4 kids for 5-6 hours once a week or once every other week. I think $5/hour is a good rate. I'm not certain though, which is why I want opinions.
This teen doesn't have a regular job so this is all fun money for her. It's totally easy money, too! If I were 16 I'd do it! That's just me though.

Does she have to drive to your house? I'd take that into consideration.
My co-worker's daughter is 17 and her rate is $10/hr. But she's also an honor student, and a certified babysitter with lots of experience. I trust her completely with my DD and have no problem paying for her services considering she is a responsible person.
You'd pay $20 a week for 8 hours of work....that is less than $2.50 an hour. I doubt you could find anyone for that.
OP- I would pay at least $8/hr. It doesn't matter if he's asleep or not.
I think $5/hr was a good rate 20 year ago, but not anymore. If she has to drive to your house it will barely be worth her time.
She won't be driving. Her guardian will take care of the transportation. She lives about a mile away.
first of all this very much depends on where you live. I have had a sitter one time (non family member... well actually a niece, so extended family) I payed her $20 for the night... she was excited to get that much. She was at our house from 6:30 until about 10:30.
Our normal dcp charges $2 per hour.... that's right two dollars an hour... so paying $5 per hour seems more than fair!
I pay my sitter $80 a week and she watches Evie 2 days a week.
ETA: She watches her for 6 hours each day.
This!
I think here in MO it's $6.50.
Like I said, I pay my sitter $80/week. It averages to about $6.66/hour and I think that's low. She's just a friend of the family and she's helping me out.
If it was anyone else, I'd expect to pay more.
Well, that is an interesting rationale. Stock shelves, working a cash register and folding scarves should pay more than taking care of a child.
I also think it is important for young women to not undervalue their services. A good lesson to learn during the teenage years.

A stowaway on board!
I was comparing apples to oranges, but only implying that it would be extremely difficult for a teenager to make $10/hour doing anything. Teenagers expect minimum wage, yes, but for working a "real" job having taxes taken out. This job is cash, real work for 2 hours and sitting around for another 2-2.5 hours.
The people who take care of your child for you should be the most important people. You should pay them accordingly. It doesn't matter that she's "just" 16, or that your son will be sleeping for part of the time each day. You trust her with your son's life, and you should pay her accordingly. No less than $8 an hour, IMO. $10 would be better.
Taking advantage of her youth is shady. If you value her enough to hire her to care for your child then she deserves fair pay.
I voted for >$50. I would pay her at least $60 per week.

I think at least 50, but closer to 65 or 70 would be reasonable in my area.
Could you find a teen to do it for less? Sure, but if they aren't making enough, it will be interesting to see how reliable she will be. As a teen other, more interesting last minute plans pop up all the time.
If she is only making $20 a night, see how long it takes for her to start blowing you off, b/c she really wouldn't be losing much $ and she would have a better time with friends!
If you want her to be reliable and loyal, you have to make it worth her while!
Well said.
