Re: Is Mexico for vacation safe at all???

  • My parents and our family went Nov 1-8 to Cancun/Playa Del Carmen area and we were fine. I felt completely safe the entire time, had no worries at all. The kids went with us, too. We basically stayed on our resort most of the time, but did go to some of the ruins (via tour bus from our resort) and went into Playa to shop one afternoon. Go, have fun!

Oh, my parents have a timeshare, so one of the salesman said this to us about the drug wars.... "Do you plan on doing a lot of cocaine while you're here? No? Well then you'll be fine." Wink

  • being in a mexican resort town is WAY safer than driving on the freeway to the airport
  • stay on the resort and you'll be fine. avoid drunken partying in Tiajuana.
  • this is funny to me for some reason...like- yeah- don't go to Monterrey or mexico city or tijuana...(it would be cheap, but probably not what you'd consider a vacation!)

cancun is cheap and very safe. and lovely.

  • My DH is a narcotics cop and he is not super stoked on me going anywhere near the border.  I want to do a girls trip to Cabo in February and he really would prefer we stay in the states.
  • I have a SIL who spent a lot of time there on business until recently.  She spent about 2 weeks a month there for the last year and a half and worked at the office of a US company about 30 minutes outside Acapulco.  Her company assigned a body guard to her until it got just too dangerous for her to be there at all.  She has always said the resorts give a false sense of security to tourists andif they ever watched the real news channels rather than the resort channels, they would see just how dangerous it really is.

I've heard the same thing from people at DH's office who go there for 2 year ISP's.  DH's company makes it mandatory that their employees have both a bodyguard and an armoured car when they work there.  And their office is in a nicer area.  The problem is, when andits are looking for people to ro, they target the areas where US citiens work and vacation so even those areas aren't safe.

  • We went to Playa del Carmen in August (the further south of the border you go, the better). We selected it for that reason. It was nice and we enjoyed ourselves, but 2 weeks after we got back a mexican resort was attacked by people involved in gang and drug activity Tongue Tied, so we won't be going back.

  • We went to Puerto Vallarta last month with my parents, sister and her dh and our 4 year old.  We never left the resort once we got there and felt perfectly safe.
  • I wouldn't go to Mexico and that is just my personal opinion.  Just because you "feel" safe or you know someone who went there and was fine is not good enough for me. The government has warned about travel there for a reason. Just because it hasn't happened in the town you are looking at staying at yet, does not mean it won't in the future. I would not try to predict what a drug cartel would do or where they would end up..
