Radiation Worries for Children in Dentists? Chairs

Since there has been so much in the news about the new airport scanners I thought y'all might be interested in this NYTimes article about radiation levels in xrays at the Dentist office and how most dentists aren't using machines that have a lower level of radiation for xrays.

fyi, I have only skimmed the first page so far (its 5 pages long)

Re: Radiation Worries for Children in Dentists? Chairs

  • DD will not be getting preventative x-rays. She hasn't actually been to the dentist yet, so I'm a little worried for when she does- I've heard more than a few stories about families being "released from care" based on refusal of x-rays and that makes me nervous.

Hopefully it won't be as much of an issue here, with Austin being such a crunchy town full of dirty hippies.

Totally OT, but I did a client last night whose Dad owns the property where your IL's used to live. You MIL started her and her sister with their swim lessons waaaaay back when! Small world, huh?

  • My husband is really concerned about excessive radiation. He refuses dental x-rays for himself due to his family history of cancer. He has found it to be a difficult battle to find a dentist that will treat without x-rays. I plan to decline any preventative dental x-rays for my kids. I think MDs and DDSs rely too much on them.. Didn't we treat people's teeth before x-rays?

If anyone knows of a dentist in Austin and more importantly a pediatric dentist who is OK with no x-rays, please tell us.

  • Wow, I hadn't even thought that dentists might deny service without x-rays! I haven't taken Megan yet either but have been meaning too.  I wonder if the dentist we were planning on going to (Dr. Jenny @ Little Smiles) requires them.

neat!  def a small world!   My MIL ran the swim school from the 70s until just recently when she retired, it used to be in their backyard in Anderson Mill before they moved out to that property :-)
