2nd Trimester

Emergency Appendectomy at 18 wks 1 day

Last monday, I had to have an emergency appendectomy at 10pm and was terrified. Luckily, I am back to work today and feel a ton better, just super super sore. And I believe I felt the baby move with my hand last night. :)

The surgery was scary, but only had a "5-10%" risk of hurting the baby, which to me dwindled significantly when they told me they wouldn't be and didn't touch my uterus. However, if I would have opted to not have the surgery, and my appendix ruptured, I would have been at a "30-40%" chance of not only losing the baby, but possibly my life as well.

Glad I took the surgery and am back to work already.

  • Glad you are feeling better!  I had an appy at 12 weeks, 3 days so I know what you went through.  It is a little scary, but the alternative is worse!

Don't forget to care for your incision site(s), but don't use lotion on them until they are totally healed up.

  • Glad you are doing better!

Appy's are not something to fool around with, as a ruptured appy can lead to much trouble, so good choice :)

Make sure you take it easy and relax, your body needs to heal.

  • Good for you, and I'm glad you're recovering well! I have a friend who has the most horrifying appendix/pregnancy story ever, so I'm so glad you were able to have it removed!

She was 28 weeks pregnant and attending a state HS basketball tournament with her hubby, who was the coach. She didn't feel well so her mom convinced her to go to the ER. They told her it was nothing...didn't really run any tests, but baby looked fine on an u/s, so they sent her home. She suffered through the next few days at the tournament, and once they got back home, she just felt worse...like awful worse. Hubby took her to ER again (different hospital), and this time they realized she was in pre-term labor and she had to deliver her baby girl at ~29 weeks. She was pumping and bringing milk to her baby in the NICU, but baby just wasn't doing well at all. My friend also kept getting sicker and sicker, but everyone just thought it was the stress of having a preemie and having to travel back and forth to the hospital all the time. Finally about a week later, she started vomiting green stuff during the middle of the night, so hubby rushed her back to the ER. Her doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. They scheduled her for surgery the next afternoon, thinking that she probably had an infection in her uterus and they would have to do a hysterectomy. Well, she kept getting worse and worse, so her doctor (ob/gyn) took her in for emergency surgery early the next morning, and thankfully she asked a general surgeon to assist in case it wasn't gynecologic. Turns out her appendix had ruptured (back during the b-ball tournament, roughly 2 1/2 weeks ago!), and the toxic stuff had spread to all of her organs and they were starting to shut down. I'm not exactly sure what all they had to do, but I know they had to remove a lot of infected tissue from her insides, and it was so bad, they weren't even able to close the surgical incisions right away. She was in ICU for 3 weeks with cables holding her innards in. Awful. Long story short (or not quite so long), she had a full recovery, and once they stopped feeding her daughter poisoned breastmilk, she thrived as well. I'm so glad this didn't happen to you! It blows my mind that the doctors never considered a ruptured appendix as a possible cause.

  • That is just the thing I am thankful to have avoided. My husband is in the Army and I just got out in August, so we have a Military Hospital we go to..the ongoing joke is that Military Doctors are awful..but I am so glad I had them to not joke around and take it seriously!
  • I'm glad you're ok!

  • How scary!  I had my gallbladder removed at 20 weeks and it was the same deal.  If I hadn't had it removed right away I too would have become septic.  Isn't it amazing how we think we can't take so much as a Tylenol, and then they pump pain killers through our blood and baby turns out just fine?

I'm sooo glad you're feeling better and that you have made a full recovery.  Smooth sailing from here on out!
