Gained too much weight!

Ugh I feel aweful.  I gained 15 pounds and I'm only 19 weeks and I was overweight PPC already.  I feel like the worse mother to be ever.  i've been eating relatively healthy but eating way too much and I stopped exercising.  So I plan to start counting calories and execrising to stop any addiitonal weight gain.  What else should I do?  Would it be safe to try to  lose a few pounds like (3-5)?  The worse part is that the holidays are coming which is going to be twice as hard but I guess I will just have to deal with it since I put myself in this position.  I can't believe I let myself do this.  I just hope the baby is healthy.

  • Just stay confident and watch yourself.  You don't have to count calories just eat what you want but only have one or two bites!  This should give you the taste of the foods you love without having to stress over it to much... Think of it this way... If you want a piece of pumpkin pie and a Christmas cookie have two small bites of each one for you and one for the little one!  Hope this helps!  Just stay positive you'll get through it alright!

  • I havent gained too much yet, around 8 pounds, but being overweight pre-pregnancy, while I still have so much to look forward to and enjoy this pregnancy(ie, I am really not sitting here wanting to rush it), I am already thinking about how I am going to get it off.  I think that if you continue healthy eating, and watch your portion sizes, and get activity where you can, that you will find it easier to maintain where you are at.
  • You definitely are not supposed to lose weight!  And you can't can't stop gaining weight, either, but you can gain the appropriate amount from here on out.  It's OK to count calories but check with your health care provider how much you should be getting and specific targets for protein, dairy, fruits, and veggies. Worst case, you'll just have to work it off AFTER the baby comes.

  • I don't think 15lb. is bad. If I were you I wouldn't try to lose any weight, but instead just continue to eat healthy and get in some exercise when you can.

  • I am in the same boat... up 15 pounds (likely more by now).  I asked if this was bad and my doctor said it was fine.  I went from hitting the gym 3-4 times a week to practically nothing and all I could eat in 1st tri was bread and peanut butter.

I have cut back on snacks.  If I want to have a snack I stop and make sure I am actually hungry. When I am hungry I will always eat as that is my body telling me I need food.  But, I am eating a lot more veggies and fruit as snacks as opposed to bread and crackers.  I know I am going to gain weight and I know it will be a battle after the baby arrives and stressing about it now won't do me or the baby any good. As long as my doctor is ok with it then so am I.

So, you are definitely not alone and unless there are health issues I wouldn't worry about it. Smile

  • Try not to be too hard on yourself. Unless you fell into the category where you are only supposed to gain a total of 15 lbs, I think you are already. My recommended gain was 25-35 lbs and at 20 weeks I was at 12 lbs, so my dr said that I should consider myself "halfway" there. If you gain another 15 lbs through the end, you're still in a 30 lb weight gain which isn't bad! Do not try to lose weight, but watch your calories (don't obsess and eat if you're hungry and make sure you ask your OB what your target should be). If you've been snacking on high calorie items (even healthy ones), try to add in snacks like carrots and red pepper sticks. I think it's hard not to gain weight because I'm starving all the time and I can only eat so many vegetables!

During the holidays, have a little bit of your favorites, just don't overindulge. I think it's going to be extra hard this year because like I said, I am constantly starving!

  • I count calories on BabyFit. It's a good site because it tracks not only fat and calories but also calcium, iron, folic acid, etc. So it doesn't feel like a diet, but rather like working with a nutritionist. My doctor's office also recommends getting 200 minutes of walking or other low-impact activity each week. I was normal weight to start but wanted to gain appropriately; so far I'm up 6-7 lbs.

  • Dont feel too bad. I gained about 16 lbs. already at my last appointment when I wasnt even 17 weeks. I may have been eating more junk food than usual for the month before halloween but lately I have tried to eat healthier again for the most part and I go to the gym almost every day and Im still gaining weight. I hate it. I was at a normal weight pre-pregnancy but I just feel so fat now. I asked my doctor about it and hes not concerned at all. He told me not to worry about it, that Im supposed to be gaining weight. I just dont wanna gain too much. But Im not gonna try to diet or anything cause I know its not good for the baby.

  • I gained over 50 lbs. with DS and was never told that my weight was a problem.  I think if you're not sick in 1st tri you tend to start gaining weight earlier, but it levels off later on.

Be healthy now, but don't worry about losing weight until after baby comes!

  • I am 21 weeks and have gained 17lbs... I am not stressing too much about it at this moment... if I gain  1lbs a week from now to delivery... I still will have only gained 36lbs... which is less than what I did with my first pregnancy (40lbs). If you are eating healthy, just start watching how much you are eating. Try walking, parking further from the mall or place you are going... just be a little more conscious. Don't stress too much!!

  • I think what you are doing (eating healthy and exercising) is the only answer.  Just remember you only need 250-300 extra calories a day for the baby so portion sizes will be key.  I try to really focus on getting the most bang for my buck in deciding what to eat so generally I allow myself to cheat on Friday and Saturday nights when I go out or have company but aside from that I really track what I eat.  Stay away from sweets, high sodium and white starches.  You will be fine if you stick with your current plan.  And remember it is important now more than ever because you don't want to get high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • If you keep eating healthy and exercising and stick to the gaining one pound a week goal from here on out, I think you're fine. I have gained SO much weight (I didn't even want to mention it here when people were talking about still wearing their regular clothes, etc.). I honestly think I started gaining weight before *I* knew I was pregnant.

In fact, the day I took a pregnancy test, I had gotten dressed to go to the gym (I was normally running three miles a day then), and then I just felt *weird* and *starving* all of the sudden, and the next thing I knew, I wasn't headed to the gym; I was on the couch with a plate of toast and eggs. I immediately took a home pregnancy test because I couldn't figure out what else would make me do that.

I think I'm one of those women who is just going to gain a pound a week throughout--even during the first trimester. Some of my friends who are petite like me said that happened to them. My doctor hasn't said anything about my weight at all, and I was worried about it because women in town refer to her as the "Weight Nazi." I'm just going to make sure to keep doing my regular work out regimen (four day a week dance classes) and then really work on healthy eating and a lot of walking, etc., once the baby's here.

I wish I had your doctor! Lol! I am 19 weeks, just got back to my pre-preggo weight, and the doc is telling me to slow down on gaining! (I lost about 10 pounds in my first trimester)

  • I have gained 15lbs at 20 wks, and all my midwife said was that my food diary was "excellent" and she never tells this to anyone - I am a vegan, and I don't really know where the weight came from, but definitely not worried about it! I want LO to get all the calories she needs!

    Don't stress:)  Everyone is different!

  • Thanks for the support!  I'm really going to concentrate on getting my exercise from now on to avoid any issues and hopefully slow down the weight gain.  Other than the scale getting higher all the time, I feel great (probably why i gained weight the first trimester too).  I'm going to bring it up to the doctor even though I will be dieing of embarrassment inside.  I just to make sure she agrees that even though I gained weight I am still healthy and the baby should be healthy as long as a follow my plan.
