beating myself up bad... almost dropped DD!

DD is 8 months old and strong and energetic. I was playing with her last night and had her held up high and I almost dropped her. (cringe) UGH. I am such a flippin idiot.

I keep playing out the alternate version of the evening in my head, if I DID drop her. She would have fallen about 4 feet... ugh, ugh ugh. I was so upset, I couldn't even eat last night. I can imagine myself sitting in a ER with a hurt girl, hopefully it wouldn't have been too serious, I guess you can never know, and i am thankful that I didn't have to find out.

What scares me is that one day, my kids could (will?) get hurt, sick, injured, you name it. It is a part of life. All I know, is I will always worry about my family, hopefully I won't let it consume me! Also, hopefully it won't be at my hand! I love my baby more than anything in this world, i can't imagine being responsible for her pain.

Did any of you almost drop/injure your child? Have any of you actually dropped them? How serious was the fall/injury?

Re: beating myself up bad... almost dropped DD!

  • I havent dropped any of my kids or injured them.  But they have injured themselves many many times.  I'm an ER veteran lol.  the first few times I freaked out and beat myself up over it....then I realize its part of life & its gonna happen.

  • i thikn the key word here is ALMOST.  You didnt drop her - focus on that.

I have never dropped any of my kids, but I have ALMOST dropped them, ALMOST burnt them on the stove, ALMOST hit their heads against the doorway, etc etc.

    :)

  • Any injury like that which occurred with DS1 happened at the hands of his father.  That sounds bad, but DH has hit his head (accidentally) on the ceiling a couple times, etc.  And he's fine - his memory is like a steel trap.

DS2 - he's fearless, clumsy, and has a high tolerance for pain.  Not sure if that's a good or bad combo!  He's always hurting himself but bounces right back.

Point being - they will get hurt and they will be fine.  Don't beat yourself up!

  • The truth?  When DD was 2 and I was about 8 months PG, I was carrying DD into a restaurant and I tripped over the curb cut for the handicapped parking spot.  I dropped DD on the back of her head on the concrete and then pretty much landed on top of her.  We ended up in the ER with DD because she threw up 3 times that night, which is one of the signs of a concussion.

That was almost 2 years ago.  DD has no permanent damage, she still loves and trusts me and I still consider myself to be a good mom.

Don't be so hard on yourself.

  • But you didn't drop her. Seriously, don't allow guilt to take over your life. Crap happens, it's just part of life. You didn't drop her, move on. And yes, I've hurt my children before. I was spinning my youngest around the room recently and hit her head on the door jamb. I felt bad, but I just learned from my mistake and moved on. Guilt doesn't make things go away.
  • ditto ghm...Mom's have enough crap to feel bad about without adding the almosts.  And if it makes you feel better, my DD fell off her changing table twice b/c I wasn't paying attention.  And Sunday she fell out of her crib.  She's fine-so I'm not going to dwell on what could have happened.

  • I understand how scary the "almosts" are but you didnt drop her. She's fine and one day she may fall on her own but she'll be OK! Breath.

  • Really? You are freaking out that much over something that DIDN'T happen? Why not focus on the positive that you didn't drop her and she is fine? You really can't live your life on almosts.

  • Thanks everyone. I actually do feel better hearing from other moms.

Who ever said this was going to be easy, huh?

I just have to remind myself, we are only human, and I try to do the best I can. lesson learned!
  • Breathe.   It's okay.   I have never dropped one of my kids but accidently hit them/bumped into them, stepped on them, etc...YES, yes, and yes.  And so have all of my mom friends.   It's life.  It happens.  And when it does, you pick up, hug and move on.  $hit happens and its a lesson your kid(s) will need to learn from you as not to dwell on eveything....

The first time I let DD climb the jungle gym at the park alone (after 1000000x with my help and spotting), wouldn't you know she fell on her head?!?!? No premanent damage.  (Whew!!) She is in Kindergarten and just as smart as the rest of her class!

  • I accidentally slammed DS's finger in the door when he was about 1 -- I heard a loud "crack" and I thought I'd broken it, but I didn't.

When he was 4 months old, I tripped and dropped his car seat carrier on cement steps when I walking up to my mom's house. He only fell about about a foot, but was he pissed off about it.

DH took him sledding last year and they hit a patch of ice -- DS fell out, smashed his face on the ice and had a black eye for a good two weeks. A week later, I took him roller skating and he smacked the same place on a bench.

    Sh*t happens. Roll with it.

I think this might be the single best piece of parenting advice I've ever heard!

  • injury count here:  i dropped ds2 in while he was in his infant car seat. he was fine. i was a mess.

i have done the "almost drop" thing a few times. ds2 is strong, fearless, and a giant squiggler.  He tries to leap out of my arms and does the arching back thing every time i carry him upstairs to change his diaper. i can't believe i haven't dropped him down the stairs.
