Trying to Get Pregnant

Temping for crappy sleepers?

Hi all, I am new here.  I am TTC #1, cycle 2 (chemical pregnancy on cycle #1) on CD28 (whistling my way through the 2ww, trying not to POAS or drive myself NUTS). I O'd on day 20, have a 35-ish day cycle, give or take a few days.

I tried temping a few cycles back, but had to quit because my chart made no sense - temperatures ALL over the place.  I have always been the worst sleeper ever.  All the stuff I've read about temping seems to be written for people who sleep the whole night through and wake up at the same time every day.  I don't really know - is it better to test at exactly the same time every day, even if you've been awake for hours?  Or are you supposed to temp whatever time you wake up, even if it's different each day?

I get leg cramps when I sleep, so I can't just stay still and not move for hours on end. So if the answer is that you're supposed to temp at the same time each day, can anyone who has a similar type of sleeping problem tell me how they deal with it?

Hopefully I am just KU now and won't have to deal with this problem, but given the odds, I'd like to know just in case!  ;)

 Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Re: Temping for crappy sleepers?

  • From my understanding, it is better to temp after 3 solid hours of sleep then to temp at the same time w/o 3 hours of sleep.  But either way your results might be off.

I'd say I would start off by temping at the same time.  I have my alarm set to go off every morning, regardless if I have to be up or not.  If I don't have to be up, I pop the therm hit the off button, the beep from the therm wakes me up, I remember temp...and go back to sleep.

  • Hello fellow crappy sleeper! I also very rarely have 3 good consecutive hours. I have been able to clearly see my rise every cycle due to, I believe, 2 separate reasons: 1) I tried to pick the time that I most reliably have slept the deepest, as opposed to the longest. There is generally one hour of the day (even if it is the very middle of the night) that you can pinpoint that you will most likely be asleep. For me when I was off work on disability it was 10 am. When I'm back at work, it's 6:20am (when I have to get up for work.) I sleep my deepest in the hour before my alarm goes off.

    2) Switch to temping vaginally. This takes out all of the guesswork of being a mouth breather or a snorer or anything. You may have a lot of open circles, but if you temp after waking from your deepest sleep, I am pretty confident that you will see your rise.

    Good luck!

  • Hello, also from a fellow crappy sleeper.  I never sleep more than 3 hours consecutively and am often up for 45 minutes (lying there but awake) or so before I can fall back alseep.

I've set my alarm for 4 AM and wake-up to temp and then try to go back to sleep.  I count anything between 3 and 4 as temping at the right time. I also think it's fine to temp with under 3 consecutive hours if you've gotten up and gotten back down immediately with 90 mins of sleep before temping.  I know it's not perfect but it's the best I can do.  I'm the world's crappiest sleeper and I wake up 2-3 times per night!!  Also, as of last night, I do NOT look at the temp, I just put the therm down.  I was upsetting myself with my temps (anovulatory cycle probably) and then not able to fall back asleep for several nights in a row - clearly not healthy!

  • I have this problem too (not to take over your post) I wake up, check the time and fall back asleep. I'm never up for more than a minute though.

And are you really not supposed to say anything before you temp? Cause DH never hears his alarm and I'm always tapping him and saying "alarm"...force of habit.

    Good Luck
