LO allergic to rice!?!

So we started solids this weekend and every time he ate rice cereal (I made it from scratch from organic brown rice just to make sure nothing else is in there except rice and I mixed it with my bm for nutrition), he'd get a rash running from under his eyes around to his temples. I wonder if white rice would have the same effect or if it was something I ate that's in the bm?

I was saying to MH, "If he can't have rice, what can he eat!?!" (Heh, the whole time I was just thinking...he's not gonna be able to have sushi! But I think most kids grow out of their childhood allergies but can develop new allergies from there--that's what happened to me). But I thought rice is one of the most basic, least allergenic foods?

Re: LO allergic to rice!?!

  • How many times did he eat it? Did you use fresh BM each time or pumped milk (if it was pumped and all from the same session, then I'd try it with fresh BM just to rule that out, although I think it's more likely it's the rice)?

You can also try different types of rice, but he may just be intolerant to it at this point. I've found it MUCH harder to feed our boys grains vs veggies or fruit - I've mentioned before that wheat is the only grain that doesn't cause them massive constipation. We also started with rice because it's so basic, but they still reacted to it. All kids are different! Smile That said, I'm not worried that they'll have this response to rice for the rest of their lives - I figure it's just a temporary thing while their systems learn to digest food, and it's probably the same for you guys.

  • Bella couldn't eat rice because she got SO constipated from it and now she eats rice like a maniac with NO issues! Bella's only ever had a reaction to cinnamon and nothing else, oddly enough. I have TONS of food allergies and year round allergies so I was surprised that she didn't have issues with anything. You could try just the baby cereal rice and see if there's a difference in their reactions to be sure. Also I would suggest fresh BM to be sure that's not the issue...
  • i was gonna suggest the rice cereal too...

although, my sister's oldest didn't eat rice for 2 years. he thought we were trying to poison him. i finally got him to eat it and now he eats it all the time.

(yes i'm an awesome ninang aka godmother heheheh) it's being a mom that is freaking me out. hahaha

  • So I found out maybe it's not rice. We decided to try something new altogether today so we gave him squash for the first time. No bm this time. Same thing happened. I talked to his pedi and she said it might just be some sort of flush out of excitement? It's just weird cuz it gets sooo red under his eyes. I wonder if it's the spoon?

How weird! How long does it last? Are we talking like an hour or a day?

So it lasts about an hour, which makes the pedi feel like it's not an allergic reaction. Yeah, I'm pretty perplexed.

Hmm. That's so strange! Is it really rashy looking, or just mottled red? I ask because whenever Will and Dash cry, they get this mottled red color all over their face (especially the forehead and cheeks). It usually lasts less than an hour though.

Hmm, maybe it's more mottled red than rashy because it's not really that bumpy. I think the reason why it alarms me is because the area under his eyes puffs up and is all red. The red is one thing...but I think seeing on his around his eyes with the puffiness on top of that makes it a bigger deal to me.
