Nuchal Translucency Scan today - bad result

We didn't get the news we were hoping for at the NT scan today. Our baby's neck measured 4.5 mm, and we were told that normal is 3 mm or less. They said we have a 1 in 10 chance that our baby has Down's or Trisomy 13 or 18.

We are going in for a CVS next week to know for sure. Can anyone offer any words of reassurance? Does anyone know of anyone who received results like this at the NT scan but then everything turned out okay? I am very scared and worried.

Re: Nuchal Translucency Scan today - bad result

  • I am so sorry to hear this.  I haven't gotten my results back yet, so I can't speak from experience at all yet.

I know some girls on the bump have said either personally or a friend was told that they had high odds and then their baby came out perfectly fine.  That still only gives you a 10% chance of having a baby with any problems.

Hopefully someone else can chime in here.  I do believe the CVS will give you more information.

  • i am so sorry that you got bad news at your scan.  but a 1 in 10 chance that there is a problem is still a 90% chance that there is no problem at all.  I truly hope that the CVS next week yields good results

I like Susie's perspective. 90% are fabulous odds when you think about it like that.  Please keep us posted about your CVS!  I'll be praying for you.

  • I have heard of false positives and like pp said you still have a 90% chance of having a healthy baby.  I do think that the CVS will give you more information.  T&P for you!
  • I'm sorry to hear about this. But I agree with the other ladies...that's a 90% chance that everything is totally fine. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!

  • I had a friend that this happened to, and they sent her for an amio and it all turned out fine!  She said it was an awful wait....
  • My Sil had this happen to  my niece. They told her that she had markers for downs. Guess what born healthy!

  • I am sorry you are dealing with this, I can't imagine how you are feeling. We had our scan today and were told that just because it measures higher than 3 does not mean that the baby will have down syndrome or another chromosomal issue. Did you do the finger prick as well? My u/s came out normal (1.3) but we have to wait 5 days for the blood work and everything else to be looked at. They also said if we did get a higher result it just means more testing, it is not for certain your child will be born with a defect. Hopefully additional tests will show otherwise for you! Good luck.

  • I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I totally agree on the 90% of everything being fine perspective. I've read several times on this site of false results being told to women and everything being fine. Good luck with your CVS and keep us updated.
  • I don't have any personal experiences to share, but sending you T&P that your LO is healthy.  Keep us updated.
  • Thank you, everybody, for the positive thoughts and prayers! It really means a lot.

To the previous poster, no, we did not get the blood test (finger stick) portion of the test done, since we are getting the CVS next week which will tell us for sure one way or another. I hope your results are good! It sounds like they will be.

  • My friend received a similar diagnosis from her NT scan and amniocentesis, but her baby is wonderfully healthy! She spent so much of her pregnancy grieving and she wishes she could get that time back.

My personal philosophy is that most people are born with or eventually have some type of health issues, so I am just preparing myself emotionally for dealing with whatever type of child that pops out.

  • I will keep my fingers crossed for you that everything is just fine.  And like others said, a 90% chance of nothing being wrong are some great odds!

  • I'm sorry you didn't get great results.  I was watching an episode of Deliver Me on Discovery Health and a mom-to-be got possible Downs results on her first screen.  The follow-up test showed a healthy baby.  Fingers crossed that you get good news...keep us posted!

  • Im Sorry to hear of your results, but defiently agree that you have a 90% chance that your baby will be fine. My pregnancy book I am reading (babycenter canada)  says the following

" Most women given a high risk of having a baby with ds will go on to have a normal baby. Even with a risk as high as 1 in 5, your baby has 4 chances out of 5 NOT hahaving ds/ The only way to know for certain if he has ds or other abnormality is to have a CVS or Amniocentesis. The decision to have invasive tests can be difficult, but yu dont have to decide in a hutty. Sometimes, a screening test can suggest that a normal baby has a high risk of DS. This is called a false Positive. Combining an NT scan with a blood test, which is usually offered at the 1st tri screen, will give you a more accurate result.

the NT scan alone will detect 70-80% of babies with DS. The first tri screening is about 85% accurate.

on average 5% of women are given a false possitive  which translates to 1 in 20 women are wrongly given a high risk."

hope this helps calm your nerves a bit t&p

  • Sending you plenty of T&P that everything is healthy.

Both my cousin and my SIL had what were considered high odds (not sure of the exact numbers).  My cousin opted for amnio, my brother and SIL decided to wait until birth.  Both babies turned out perfectly healthy and are now thriving and happy.

  • I'm sorry that you didn't get the results that you were hoping for!  A couple of things, though -

The test really is less accurate without the finger prick, so remember that they are only going by the ultrasound portion.

They may do a second, more detailed ultrasound before doing the CVS - did they mention that? I had a friend that had the detailed ultrasound done and they were able to tell her then that everything looked okay.

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you and hoping that you get good news next week!
