Do you always give Tylenol/Motrin when your LO has a fever?

DD has a fever of 101.4, and I gave her Tylenol but then wondered if I really needed to.  Yes, she has a runny nose and is sneezing, but she is eating and acting fine.  WDYT?

  • only if it's pretty high and/or not going away, or if they seem like they're in pain. I've read that it's actually better to let them run a low fever because that is the body's way of fighting the infection. So to let it go, as long as it's not bad, will help them get better faster.

Is today day 3/4ish of this cold? If she has a fever tomorrow still, you may want to take her to the pedi. The fever could be a sign of an ear infection, especially after a few days of a runny nose.

  • I do just b/c his goes high fast & it's hard to get an keep down any time he has one. But, he also has always had fever due to another issue going on that required antibiotics.
  • Our pedi said to pay attention to the behavior rather than the number on the thermometer.  Although if it is super high, I give the meds and call.

I won't treat a low-grade fever (under 101) unless she seems uncomfortable.  Anything over 101 gets Tylenol alternating with Ibuprofen.

  • I usually do (Tylenol).  It is such an ordeal to keep temping DD (everything is an ordeal with her) so I'd rather it be covered than it go up and I don't even know.
I don't do Motrin for a fever, though.  Usually stick to Tylenol, and it does the job.  I save my Motrin for bad teething days or if one day Tylenol wasn't cutting it, but I've haven't had that problem yet.

  • Yes.  DS has a history of febrile seizures so we take any fever seriously in this house.  His daycare has tylenol on site and they have strict instructions to dose him and call if he has the slightest fever.

  • We generally don't unless the fever is over 102-102.5 or they seem to be uncomfortable. When possible, I prefer to let the fever do its job of trying to kill whatever virus LO has.
  • Yes. Motrin. It seems to work better. I have no problem giving it when he has a fever.
  • No, I wouldn't even think to unless it was high.
