If you're talking actually in the ear canal itself, you don't get it out, you leave it. If you're concerned that it's excessive, keep an eye on it, and if you think it continues to be too much have his pedi check it out to rule out any problems.
If you're talking outside the ear canal, just in the folds of the ear, then it's perfectly safe to take a cotton swab and gently remove the wax. Just don't go into the canal.
I use a qtip and lay it flat against her ear - not in the canal but right up against the opening and I twist the qtip. I'm not shoving more wax into her ear or compacting it, just getting out what I can easily see & reach w/ the qtip.
