Baby Food = Fail : (

So I was really excited about trying out baby food.  And we started this past Friday night.  I tried Gerber rice cereal and Neosure formula mixed togehter.  I tried Earth's Best banana and sweet potatoes 1st baby food.  But basically baby Aidan was wearing the baby food rather than eating eat.   A spoon was the most foreign thing to him, and he wanted his bottle.   Luckily, the baby food came out when I washed the clothes.

My baby has a thick neck, so it is hard to find a good bib that fits his neck.  The only bibs that really fit are his Gap Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner bibs from last year.  But they do not sell them anymore.

And I decided that I would be sneaky and put rice cereal in his formula and fed it to him by bottle on Sunday night.  I tried to comfort him later, and he spitup/puked his formula on my hair and coat.   It was a crazy mommy moment.  I gave baby to my husband and took a shower to regroup.

Anyway, I do not think he is ready for baby food yet.  WIC had already given me checks for 7 cans of Similac Advanced formula and baby cereal and 2nd baby food 4 oz jars.  I called them and they told me my pediatrician could write a prescription to get extra formula and that Medicaid would take care of the extra cans of Similac Advanced formula.

We are also about to transition from Similac Neosure to Similac Advanced.    I have three more cans of Neosure.  I am just hoping that it will go well.  It is snowing here, and this week is Thanksgiving.

  • Aw! Don't give up yet! I recommend starting with baby food first...I know it seems weird but grains are really fiberous and can give the little ones constipation...Their digestive system is designed to handle such complicated carbs yet...My little one is doing well, sometimes he's in the mood and sometimes not, we have made it through squash and are now on bananas.

  • Don't give up yet. When we first tired baby food, DD hated rice cereal. We went to sweet potatoes next. I would try that for 3 or 4 days before moving onward to something else. Good luck.

  • Bumkins bibs are great and they have adjustable velcro so they fit a wide variety of sizes.  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3504447  They rinse off very easily too.

For solids, you said he only wanted his bottle.  Are you feeding solidsafter a bottle?  I would feed them 30 minutes to an hour or so after feeding a bottle.  Their primary nutrition is still milk so they should fill up on that first.  Then try a very plain fruit/veggie - sweet potatoes, pears, etc.  Just one kind once or twice a day for 3-4 days, then try another.  We didn't do rice cereal - he hated it, but did like oatmeal after a little while.  Rice constipated pretty much every kid I've met.

You might want to experiment with the time of day.  Dinner never worked so well for us, but he did eat at breakfast.  The first while, he may only eat a few bites - take a small portion from the jar into another dish and feed from the dish so you don't have to throw away the whole jar.  DS probably ate ~1/3 of a jar a day for the first few weeks.  Right around 7-8 months adjusted he took off on solids eating and started to consume a lot, but before that he just nibbled.

Also, I've heard to never put cereal in his bottle.  It can make them choke and should only be done when medically necessary (severe reflux, etc).

Good luck - I'm sure he'll be eating in no time.

  • My DD refuses to eat the food I made (sweet yams mixed with a bit of formula.)  She wipes the food off of her mouth.  lol
