Anyone buy their own short term disability insurance for maternity leave not through employment?

We are going to start TTC for #2 this spring/summer. I do not have any paid maternity leave and my job does not offer short term disability. DH and I were thinking of looking into getting my own individual policy soon so I could use it when I go on maternity leave. Did anyone purchase their own not through work? What company did you use and if you dont mind, what is a ballpark figure what I would pay each month? TIA!

  • My friend had Aflac with her last two kids. The benefits were enough to cover her entire maternity leave on both and when her son ended up in NICU it covered a lot of expenses insurance wouldn't!! I'm actually looking into  it on the cost part!

  • I bought Colonial Pen.  You get a lump sum check, which is a % of your check, plus a payment for each day in the hospital, one for being admitted, etc.
  • Aflac is awesome, but you can only get their STD through work.  You should ask your employer to carry it - it won't cost them a thing!
