Gift for my sister- who I don't like. Ideas?

No, we don't talk. And yes, it is sad. But, it is what it is. I don't know what to get her.

She just got engaged, and her and SO just bought a house, but she is traveling so nothing she will have to haul, but I don't want to do a gift card.

Anyone have any ideas?  Maybe a book about weddings?  Or a DIY girl book?  Hmmm....

  • If I didn't talk to her, I would not get her a gift. Seems weird to not talk to someone but give them a present. Kind of hypocritical.
  • If you don't talk, how about nothing? Why do the fake BS?

Great Idea! Or a book. Does she cook? Willams sonoma has great cook books including a nice Bride/Groom one...

Does she like the holiday season? A small Christmas decoration to start off her new new home might be nice.

I think things like candles and lotions are always safe and generic for women.....

  • I agree with PP, nothing. If you don't speak why would you buy her a gift?

This.  I don't understand why you want to get her something.

To keep the peace. Make my mom happy. Its not that we don't speak to each other, we just don't go out of the way to do so.

I love the magazine idea! I'm gonna do that for DH to! The gift that keeps on giving

Glad you like it. I've done it a few times and it's always a hit :)

  • Oh. When I say "I don't like/talk to my sister", I mean it. We don't talk, I don't like her, and I wouldn't waste my money buying her something.
  • How about if you have a gift shipped to her house before she comes to visit. Maybe an engraved door knocker with their married last name or personalized stationary.

I have a sister in law that I don't really talk to, we "catch up" at family functions, when she show up, but other then that we don't speak.  I would also give a gift to acknowledge her engagement. Someday you might repair your relationship and you wouldn't want to have ignored her engagement.  I think you are doing the right thing.

  • I am totally stealin g the magazine idea for my sister...we aren't close and don't go out of our way to chat...in my dh's noni's words we "keep it shallow" when we are together...eh...it is what it is...but I still wouldn't snub her on xmas...
  • A wedding planning book would be a good idea. Or a nice frame to put their engagement and/or wedding photo in. Or you could get them a gift certificate to a place like Canvas on Demand to get one of their wedding photos put on a canvas. You could get her a spa package (I think you can get universal ones from spafinder.com or something like that) so she can relax when she's stressed with the wedding plans. Wine of the month club membership? IDK.
