Driving 3.5 hours to my mom's, eating t-day dinner at 10:30 in the morning, and then driving 3.5 hours back. I wish I were kidding about the 10:30 thing.
I'm hosting! It will be me, Dh, Ds, my best friend, her quasi-boyfriend, my brother, and his girlfriend. We're having a little bit of turkey, gluten and corn free stuffing, rice pilaf, cranberry sauce, salad, sweet potatoes, gluten free pumpkin pie, and gluten free pecan pie. I'll also make homemade whipped cream for the pie. Woo!
This was a really hard menu to plan. My brothers girlfriend is a vegetarian, has celiac disease (no gluten), and a corn allergy. My brother is a vegetarian. My husband is a carnivore. My best friend and her boyfriend are up for whatever. I'm up for everything except the meat. I'm not keen on meat. I'll only eat plain chicken breasts occasionally.
We're going over to a neighbor's house, which I'm excited about. We usually host, well, have one friend (who is more of a work friend from a former job) over and I've always missed the feeling of family/celebrating that comes from a larger gathering. All of our close friends leave town for T-day, so it's kind of become this day where we mosey around the house until it's time to cook, etc. This will be nice!!!! So excited! Hopefully I can cook an item to bring over - I haven't remembered to ask what would be helpful, though!!

Long and short of it is that it's because that's when we arrive at my mom's house.
We eat, laze around for a bit, eat dessert, and then we're back on the road home. It started with my grandparents who didn't like driving in the dark (hence why we leave early afternoon). The tradition just kind of stuck.
We are going to BIL &SIL's house. I am not super excited since it is my favorite holiday and I am pretty sure we are eating off paper plates. It's a holiday people- used real dishes...it's not like there will be a large number of people. (sorry for the mini ven)
We are hosting for the first time and we're sharing our news with the family. We've been keeping our pregnancy a secret from them and this Wed. evening we're spilling the beans and can't wait!!
As for our menu, we are using a heritage turkey and then having traditional food:
Mashed Potatoes
Green Beans
Pies
Stuffing
Rolls
Sweet Potato Casserole
Corn Pudding
That's all I can remember right now. We're also doing mostly everything from scratch which will be a new thing for my parents, so I'm excited to show off my new cooking skills! lol
Re: Plans for Thanksgiving?
we go over the river (and bay) and through the woods, to grandmother's house.

Pixy - can I ask why 10:30?

It's just DH, the kids, and myself this year.
Menu:
apple cider brined turkey, cranberry sauce, cornbread stuffing, greenbean casserole, garnished corn, loaded mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade pickle tray, roasted butternut squash, pumpkin pie, apple dumblings
We're driving 3 hours to my parents house on Thursday morning & will come home Sunday. The kids are very excited!
The usual stuff on the menu. I'm in charge of drinks, rolls & pumpkin pie. My Mom does the rest.
DH is out of town today thru Wednesday so that's kind of a bummer in terms of the time it will take me to make the above items and pack for everybody.

Our family is providing:
Dressing
Green Beans
Mashed Potatoes

It'll be nice for neither of us to have to do all the cooking, since we both have newborns still!
Since dh has to work wed - sunday we are having dinner at our house with just the 6 of us. My mom is doing the Turkey and I am doing the sides.
Green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, corn and broccoli ( hurray for finding both frozen and organic.)
