Had our well baby visit this morning. LJ weighs 22.5 pounds and is 29.5" long. Wowza!!!
So we were talking about which foods he likes, doesn't like, etc and our pedi said "What about cereal?" I told him we stopped that when we started solids. He said it's a good source of iron and we should still be giving him some until he moves to stage 3 foods.
I trust him, I love him, but really? I thought that was just 'practice' food? Anyone else still doing cereal?
Re: 6 month baby stats and a food question
Do you BF or FF? If FF, most formulas are fortified with iron anyway.
We still give DD "cereal" - oatmeal, in our case (my DD didn't really like rice cereal all that much). I've been mixing it in with certain fruits that were known to cause constipation (like bananas and apples). So far we haven't had any constipation problems, though sometimes her poop is a little drier than usual.
How much? And do you do it at the same sitting as food? Or breakfast = cereal, dinner = squash (or whatever)?
Thanks

Typically we do cereal in am + a fruit.
And, veggie + fruit at dinner time...
At 6 months this is what I did now that she is older she gets oatmeal and fruit for breakfast.

We do oatmeal in the morning with a little bit of banana, and then just plain veggie at night.
The instructions from my peid state:
2-4 Tbls of cereal (I don't know if that's mixed or dry - she doesn't get nearly this much) 2-4 times per day
AND
2-4 oz of purees 2-4 times per day.
I'm happy if she eats 2 - 2oz tubs a day (which is rare) and we mix that with probably 2 T of cereal total.
Purees have little nutrition (cause it's been pulverized out of them) if she's filling her belly with them, I'd like to add the cereal for iron and DHA. (we bf)

I usually mix one ice cube of food with one teaspoon of cereal (we've always used oatmeal) and then thin it out with BM.
I use it a lot still because sometimes the food is too overpowering and I feel like the oatmeal blands it out a little. DD tolerates it better.
We do oatmeal added to the fruit in each of our meals. I do a fruit and a veggie for breakfast and dinner. I think the fiber of the oatmeal prevents against constipation as well with things like bananas and apples. I just add the desired amount to the fruit cube after defrosting and thin it with breast milk to the desired consistency.
Also, my son didn't care for rice cereal at all but will readily eat oatmeal when mixed with fruit. Plus, if you look at the nutrition content of oatmeal; it beats rice cereal hands down!
