rec your humidifier

Ours kicked the bucket last year so I need to purchase a new one for this winter.  What do you have and do you like it?  Do you have a seperate one in each bedroom?

Re: rec your humidifier

  • We have the Crane Frog one in Isabella's room.  It's cute and all, but it leaves a white, dusty residue on everything.  Maybe it's just our hard water and lack of a water softener, but I wouldn't repurchase.

We have the crane penguin (lovingly named 'Humy') and we love it. We have soft water though...so we don't have the issue with the white film. Have you tried using filtered water or nursery water? You could buy one with a filter already in it if you have hard water.

  • We have the Crane Frog cool mist - we love it.  We have hard water but with a water softener.  We put filtered water into the humidifer though.

When Andrew got a bad cough we bought a warm mist - better for coughs. I think cool mists are recommended for safety reasons, but Andrew can't get to it so we're careful.

We bought the optional filter for it, and it doesn't help at all.  I've tried using filtered water from the fridge, but I am not about to buy water jugs just to fill it.  We have another one in our room, but it needs a new filter and I'm having a hard time finding it.

  • We have the Crane cow and have horrible white dust, even with our water softener and filtered water, so we are now using jugs of distilled water until we can get a new one. MISERY.

I polled all my FB friends and they are rec'ing the Vicks UV one.  Everyone who has it likes it.

  • I don't have it yet, but we're planning to get the Crane teardrop shaped one for DD's room. I was just researching humidifiers and this one is recommended by Consumer reports.

I'm also planning to get a larger one for the living room, but only because we have a wood burning stove insert that we use a lot. It really dries out the air. We have a couple other humidifers that we've used in our room, but they have filters and they're a huge PITA to find sometimes (as well as pricey).

  • We have this one in Ella's room and I really like it. We have a different one in our room - also a Vicks, but pretty basic. Does the job!

    Edited to add link! Sorry!

Just looked at the reviews. The vicks one seems like a good option too.

We have the first one Lauren linked.  We like both of ours.  The Vicks is much easier to fill and carry than the Froggie one :)

  • In the past we have had 2 different cool mist ones and the first one leaked and the crane elephant one put the same aforementioned dust everywhere (I walked in to Emma's room one night and coughed because of it - thus the end of it).  This year we got a warm mist vicks one at target (it was around $30 and the only option I think).  We had always been told to stay away from warm mist because it will heat the room up a little bit.  Well, Emma's room gets pretty cool now that we aren't in Louisiana so we went for it.  I ended up getting one for our room and her room and I feel it works great.  We were both sick when I bought them and I was able to sleep much better than I probably would have.  HTH!!

ETA: We have the one Lauren linked.  No issues, and super easy to fill and carry.  Also, we have it sitting up so Emma can't get to it.

  • I want to add about the warm mist ones, too - it's not at ALL hot, meaning that there's no danger of a steam burn or any other burn from the heating element.

Ella's room runs cool in the winter, too, so we like the added bonus of another degree or so.

Ditto this.  I found it to be warm, but not like boiling water steam.  I would imagine the "danger" is if they were to pull it down on themselves and get the water the is just off the heating element.  That's just a guess though.

  • We also have the Vick's Warm Mist and I really liked it.  In fact, I think we're going to get a 2nd one this year for our master bedroom.
  • We have the same issue w/the frog one.
