Daycare children sick....great!!

My sitter text me this morning after I'm already at work to let me know that her daughter has strep throat, pink eye and a scarlett fever rash!!  awesome!!  She said she would keep her isolated....but I really just hope DS doesnt get infected again but I dont really have any options but to have him stay there - it's that time of year I guess.  :( Vent over.

  • Indifferent

You can't pick him up?  Yikes!

It seems hypocritical that he can't stay there if sick, but there isn't a back-up plan if her own daughter is obviously very contagious.

She said she meant to tell us last night but they didnt get home from the ER till 1030pm and forgot to tell my husband this morning when he dropped Clark off (not sure what we could have done at that point).  I could go pick him up but really cant afford to miss much more work plus she does have antibiotics and drops started last night and is keeping her isolated in her room.  I'm in a lose lose situation.   At least he will only be there today and wednesday all day and only a half day tomorrow........please GOD dont let him get sick again!!!

  • Her kid is so sick she's in the ER, and she forgot to tell you?  Indifferent I mean I can understand if she didn't call you last night, but to forget until after you are both at work, wow.

I'm sorry I'd be beyond pissed.

Does she have a policy for that?! Or is it just someone you know who watches him as a favor?

I hope he doesn't get it.  Can your husband miss work? A parent in town that could help?  I mean, he's already there now but man. I know I'm more sensitive than most to this stuff :-)

  • Oh man...i hope he doesnt get sick, although I wouldnt be surprised if he doesnt.  I started looking at a back-up inhome daycare that Luke could go to for this same reason.  Our babysitter is in her 50's so she is rarely sick but just in case a friend can't watch at the last minute it is something nice to have.

I guess she thought it was too late last night to let us know and DH drops DS off at 645am so he probably just passed him off and ran out the door to get to work on time.   I just dont know what to do anymore...I dont want to get in a fight with her and be upset about it and my mom gets off work at 1230 but by the time she could get him it would be 130pm and by then it's kinda pointless since DH picks him up at around 330pm as it is and anyone that could go to get him wouldnt have a carseat for him.  I just feel helpless at this point...I already am taking a half day tomorrow because she has to close early.

If I have to work from home I have to work from home but I have missed enough already and have some days off already coming up. I just really hope he doesnt get sick again....you are thinking he wont??  wasnt sure if I understood your first sentence??

  • Policy is that if she has one of her own children sick she needs to notify us and then it's up to us whether we want our child at her home for daycare.   she is keeping her isolated in her room away from all of the other children so that helps - crossing my fingers that he doesnt get sick again but at least he will be at home Thursday- next monday :) (in case he does end up being sick that works out!!)  I'm trying to look at the positive side!!
  • I would be upset! Honestly, if I was worried about my kid getting sick, I would go get them. Work will have to understand and I know my job understands that family comes first!

I wold be super upset too.  And ditto with work.  But I have a job that allows me to bring her with me if necessary.

But...chances are, if the kiddo came down with it this weekend he was already exposed last week, right?

I'm not happy about it by any means but it's not just down the road and my work has been very understanding but at this point there is nothing more I can do about it.  If I had known last night he wouldnt have gone but now that he is already there and the sick child is being isolated there is not much more I can do about it.  The sick child got drops and antibiotics last night so she should be less contagious at this point.  ::hands up in the air::

Exactly........and Clark had an ear infection and pink eye already himself Nov 2-5th and then on the 18th he had a fever and I picked him up from daycare and got him back to the dr. to make sure it wasnt the ear infection back again and was told it was teething/cold virus so he stayed home the afternoon of the 18th and all day on the 19th.  So if he was going to have anything again he would have already had it i'm sure.   It is what is at this point and I feel like I cant please anyone or do anything right.

  • I would be upset that she did not stick to her policy.

And you better believe I wouldn't be afraid to upset her by pointing it out.

If I couldn't be open and discuss something like that with my child care provider, I also would be finding a new one if I could.

I am truly sorry you're in the this situation and I really hope Clark does not get sick, especially for Thanksgiving.

I understand about employers only being so flexible.  Mine was really flexible and even then, I was burning all my vacation.  In that aspect, it's tough being a working mom.

I did end up talking to her about the issue.  She apologized for not letting us know right away and did let me know that she will make every effort to let us know in a more timely manner next time.  Her policy is if her own children are sick she will let us know and then its up to us if we still want to send our child to be watched at her home.  It is what it is.....if I had known last night he would have stayed home but nothing I can do now about it and she is making effort to make sure clark doesnt get exposed by keeping her child isolated.  She is very very good with Clark and has caught his sicknesses very early for us so I cant fault her for that.
