BF'ers... ? about workouts

I stopped working out when I got my BFP (I know you shouldn't, but I m/c my 1st pregnancy and was super nervous) but I was on my feet 40+ hours/week at work running around so it wasn't like I was sedentary. I want to get back into going to a gym to get some good core strength b/c my back is really suffering, my concern is that it will affect my supply. I'm doing WW and watching what I eat (which has always been a big part of my problem). Thoughts? Experiences? TIA Big Smile

  • I have actually noticed an increase in supply with the running I have been doing. Probably, the biggest thing  is more your diet and that your fluid and caloric intake are enough.

  • I haven't noticed any supply issues with my exercising. In fact, I ran 22 miles last weekend and came home engorged. I do notice a dip in my supply when I limit my calories so you might want to keep that in consideration.
  • Exercise has never affected my supply but I have never had supply issues, if anything I make too much milk. I exercise 6 days a week for an hour and watch what I eat. As long as you are eating healthy food and drinking plenty of water exercise shouldn't hurt your supply.
  • I had absolutely no problem with running and my supply (or DS's desire to eat!  lol)

I've even nursed him minutes before starting a half marathon and immediately after crossing the finish line (okay, I may have eaten a bagel first  lol)

  • Working out has never affected my supply.  I just make sure to stay hydrated and to take off my sports bra right after my workout to avoid clogged ducts.

    Ha,ha. Ditto.

I've been able to do a tri, and three 1/2 marathons since delivery. She eats before I exercise, and right when I finish. So far, so good.

  • When I was BFing DD, I started out slow at 3 months with my training (mostly running) because I wanted to make sure it didn't affect my supply and it didn't.  I think once you have a strong supply (at least 3 months), I think you are fine.  Make sure you feed her before you go out and then when you return.  But I ran several races after DD was born and never had any supply issues.  GL!
  • I noticed a drop in my supply, but it was mostly during the summer when I'd get super dehydrated.  I still notice a small dip now, but I just suppliment with more formula.
