Minnesota Babies

winter coats

Even though I'm only 8wks along most of my jeans don't fit. I'm fully aware of the bloating (that's all that I've been told....no baby bump...you're just bloated) but still can't wear jeans. I'm already going to purchase my first pair of maternity jeans since I can't even get my old ones over my hips anymore! Which brings me to coats. I can't zip mine but don't want to spend a fortune. I'm talking like $40 is the preferred amount. Any ideas? I'm totally for secondhand shops as well. I live in a very rural area so I might just do some calling around before making the trip. Thoughts? TIA.

Re: winter coats

  • In the past, Target has had some cute (and inexpensive) maternity coats.

If you go secondhand, try to find a roomy wool coat w/buttons. I've been pregnant twice thru winter and liked to button the top couple buttons and "wrap" the bottom. I was warm enough as a pregnant lady that it did the trick.

Also, it's not glamorous, but does your husband have an extra coat lying around?

  • I ordered one from Old Navy online last year.  I don't remember how much it was exactly, but it was around the $40 price range with shipping.  I'm not sure where you are at, but Bellies to Babies is a great used maternity clothing store.  Whether they have a maternity coat or not, it would still be worth the trip.  Most of their pants are $9, and tops are $6, I think.  Also, pick yourself up a belly band, you can either wear your pre-pregnancy pants unbuttoned under it, or use it as a 'belt' to help hold up your maternity pants that may be a bit loose yet.

  • JCPenny's also has some Saint Johns Bay coats I believe on sale for about 40 something.  I've heard those coats are just like a Columbia jacket
  • I am currently 27, almost 28 weeks along and I am still able to fit into one of my more roommier coats. I tried to wear my Columbia this morning and could not zip it up but I was able to get the first few buttons shut.

I am not going to go out and buy a new/new to me coat that is only going to last me less than 3 more months. I guess I am just cheap. The running joke is, is that I will end up wearing my coats backwards to cover up baby to and from my car.

As for the bloating right now, make sure you are drinking plenty of water and limit your salt intake- it will help. It did for me! I had a lot of bloat going on, but now I am just baby. I think that once your bloat goes away, you will be fine to get through winter with what you already have.

If you really want to get a coat, I would shop used clothing stores, look for something with a lot of extra room in the belly area or even look for a men's coat. They seem to be a lot more roomy than womens.

    Good luck!

  • I had two end of March babies and was freakin' *HUGE but never bought a special coat.  I had a fairly roomy one and just never zipped it.  Hell, nothing fit in the end!  I outgrew my dh's XXL tall clothes and I'm naturallyTHIN!  Btw, I did fit in one pair of SUPER low rise gap jeans til almost the end.  Of course I was carrying a bit higher, but it was pretty crazy!

    Good luck :)  Maybe you'll become a furnace.  I was mad that I didn't!

  • Definitely Old Navy Maternity! I'm due in April and will need a winter coat. Prices range from $35 to $65 and they might have a sale on black Friday!
