School-Aged Children

Update on our morning

I set the timer at 8 am (kids were dressed, brushed, etc) for 10 mins, since they'd already been at the table for 10 mins and were dawdling.  Wouldn't you know it, they both finished before the time went off!  Everyone had their shoes/coats on and we were out the door on time.  =)

  • Yay!  I missed the earlier thread (work has been busy; end of grading period!)

This has been an issue with my kiddos as well.  I solved the problem in 2 ways:

    1. Made a visual schedule that looked like a clock so that my kids know that when the big hand is between the 12 and the 3, they're getting dressed/teeth brushed, etc.  When they were old enough to tell time, we used a written schedule.

    2. Reorganized our morning so that breakfast was the last thing before going out the door to the bus.  No one gets served breakfast until everything else (dressed, pottied, teeth brushed, shoes on, coat/lunch/backpack ready) is done.  It's amazing how quickly 2 kids can gobble down breakfast when the threat of dawdling is that they'll miss the bus.  When dawdling over food just delays having to get teeth brushed and shoes on, they're totally willing to take 45 minutes to eat a bagel or bowl of cereal!

I've been thinking about making a chart b/c my 3 y/o is clueless about what a clock says and what it means to her.  DS gets it, but a visual reminder would still be helpful.  I will have to do that this weekend!

I also started getting them dressed, etc. before bfast.  If they dawdle, I just start walking out the door.  It's amazing how fast they can move when I do that.  lol!  It would help if I woke up a little earlier too.  =O  But, some days it feels like the more time I have, the more time it takes to get out the door.  I think b/c I do more for them since I feel like I have the time to.
