Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Cloth diaper mamas, come in.

DH and I are switching to cloth diapers for Bryce. A friend of mine has recommended using Kushies during the day, and Fuzzi Bunz at night. What do you all recommend using? I know they are pretty expensive, so I want to be sure I spend my money on something that I will like, something that will last, and something that gets good recs.

Thanks!

  • Even with a toddler we tend to use prefolds during the day when we're at home, fitteds (Goodmama's) when we're out and around during the day, and BG or Fuzzibunz at night.  This has worked really well for us since she was little and we have one size diapers (except for the prefolds) so we are not spending money all of the time.

  • I would only suggest trying a few different kinds before investing so that you see what you like.  We do prefolds/cover during the day, stuffable fitteds/covers for night, and fuzzibunz if we are out running errands or traveling.  Jillians Drawers as a $10 trial system you might want to try.
  • We use Sunbabies pocket diapers for day. They are an ebay brand and super cheap. Like $5 a diaper cheap. Some people hate them, but I think they are great. Nubunz is a good cheap brand too if you would rather made in the US than China.

We use goodmamas and a fleece cover for night. GM's can be very expensive but I have gotten all of mine used on Hyena Cart Spots Corner for around $10 each.

The cloth diaper board has a bunch of info. Page StephanieDM she is the CD expert :)

  • Thanks ladies! Just a question about the Fuzzi Bunz.. if I use these at night, I don't have to put a protective covering over them, right? I just have to stuff them?

    You are correct!

    Yep.

Pockets, AIO (all in ones), and hybrid all in two's have a waterproof cover attached called PUL. They do not need a cover.

Fitteds, prefolds, and flats do need a cover because there is no PUL associated with them. You can use PUL covers, fleece, or lanolized wool.

ETA: Fuzzibunz are pockets and can be stuffed to suit your needs. I stuff with a microfiber insert plus a hemp insert for naps for more absorbency. If your child is a heavy wetter you may need more.

  • Perfect! Thanks for all the info and advice ladies.

I haven't heard anyone mention Kushies. Has anyone used these?

I second this.  Everyone has different preferences when it comes to CDs.  We have bumGenius one size diapers.  We like them, but hate the aplix.  I wish we would've gotten the snaps.

  • We LOVE FuzziBunz.  I can stuff them with triple inserts or Hemp for night, but keep it trim for day wear.  & they have a higher rise than BG or Rumparooz, so they fit Harrison as a toddler better.

Right now, I love Monkey Snuggles with a Thirsties cover for night, but those are pricey.

Look at you all knowledgeable about CD's. Miss I only CD for night time.

I'm all proud and stuff. :)

    lolz.

I'm thinking of teach my sis how to use them so we can CD full-time, but just haven't gotten around to sitting down with her & showing her how it's done.  Maybe on Thanksgiving?

CD's saved my sanity.  Since we started using them, I've only had one night where Harrison woke up soaked in pee!  (so gross)

I have gotten everyone on board except my mil. But she is a lost cause. I even have DH CDing now which I thought would never ever happen! GL with your sister.

My MIL would never, ever do it.

My parents are completely on board after vacationing with us this summer (we CD'ed the entire week).  I think if I stick to simple pockets or AIO's during the day, it won't make a lick of difference.

Sorry to butt in on your converstaion, but I think this is what we are going to do. I think I will start off trying Kushies for daytime, and Fuzzi Bunz at night. Bryce's DCP told me this morning that she is okay with cloth diapers as well because she used to use them for her LO. I think I have everyone on board! :)

  • I'm all for simplicity, so we use BG 3.0s around the clock. I just add a prefold or a hemp insert for nighttime. Big fan!
  • We have a big mix of diapers.  I find that works best because different situations call for different diapers.  I prefer my Rumparooz and BG pockets to my other pockets (FB and Happy Heineys).  We use GroVia as a hybrid system when traveling and use fitteds (GMs and B4s) at night with wool.  I've never heard a positive review of Kushies.  I also think that FuzziBunz are a hard fit.  I like them, but we only have two and DH never reaches for them because he can't seem to get a no-leak fit on them with DD who is tall and skinny.

I really urge you to try the Jillian's trial.  No matter how much the diapers  that you buy cost, they will be very expensive if it turns out they don't work for you, don't fit your LO, or you just flat out don't like them.
