Babies: 3 - 6 Months

what's your feeling on using the bumpers that come with cradle set?

I tied on the bumper from the cradle set the other day b/c she had been sticking her arms through the slats and I was afraid she'd get stuck and hurt herself. she's not rolling over during the night yet. the cradle is 6 inches from my bed, so i'm pretty aware of her during the night, but i was just wondering what others were doing.

  • no bumpers here. If there is something I can do to make Owen safer in his crib then I do it.

  • I personally wouldn't use them, there are breathable bumpers for cradles that I would buy.

  • I have the bumpers on still. She has been fine
  • It's really you choice.   We don't use bumpers here.     No serious injuries have been reported (well - at least on the studies I've looked at) without the use of bumpers, but there have been deaths/injuries because of bumpers.    However small the risk/chance of suffocation related injury/death, it's one of those things that can't be predicted - only prevented.
  • We use breathable bumpers. I'm sure she would be fine with the other, but if something were to happen, I couldn't live with myself.

I have done lots of research on SIDS and based on what I have discovered through that research I am comfortable using bumpers in my LO's cradle and crib.  It's a personal choice and only you can decide if you're comfortable with it, as goes with

Me too. I learned that putting a baby in a car is the most dangerous thing you can do, not crib bumpers. (But some would say that using a car with a baby is not a choice whereas using bumpers is a personal choice that could be avoided.) Each parent can make their own decision, but alot of bumpies will give you strong opinions on this topic.

  • Yep, its a personal choice...just like everything else in life. Why you wouldnt chose the safer choice is something I will never understand. I guess with crib bumpers I dont really get why you would use one...

if you have a child that smacks themselves into the side of the crib repeatedly and wakes themselves up when they do and a bumper is the only thing that keeps them sleeping for long stretches of time then you may understand.

that being said, i started off not using bumpers and them my daughter was flailing herself all around the crib waking herself up and i put them on and all she did was push them down with her feet so they were useless for me.

  • We started using breathable bumpers when they got limbs stuck.  My boys love to scoot into the corners, and I'd never feel comfortable with a real bumper.
