Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How did you start incorporating the sippy cup?

Our ped didn't say anything about starting to give DS water or the sippy cup at our 6 month check-up, so I was curious to see how other moms started incorporating it into your LO's day.  Did you start putting some water in, and letting them play with it, anytime, or do you have specific time you give LO the cup?  I have read not to let LO carry around a filled sippy cup all day, but I'm not sure why not.  Also, did you begin putting their breast milk or formula in there after a while?  I know you're supposed to wean from the bottle by 1 year - does that mean LO should be taking milk (I know cow's milk at one year) exclusively from the sippy cup at 1 year?  Any info would be helpful!  Thanks!

  • We started giving it to her with meals.  We have to help her with it but she's slowly learning how to do it on her own.  She might get an ounce or 2 of water, not much at all.

  • From what I've read I think the caution with overusing the sippy is it becomes another comfort thing to wean from.

  • I gave both my kids a sippy with water to play with shortly before 6 months.

My DD would have nothing to do with it even though I offered it all the time.  It took me cutting a nursing session when she was FOURTEEN months to get her thirsty enough to drink something from the cup.

DS chugged right away so now he gets pumped breastmilk out of his cup when he's too "awake" to nurse (he's in a super-distracted phase right now where he'll only nurse when he's really sleepy).

I put water in it and let DS "play" with it. He can get the spout in his mouth, but doesn't get to tilt it up.

    This exactly!

    This.
