Breastfeeding

Do you get weird looks?

My DD is just over 6 months old. I haven't started feeding her solids, because 1. being breastfed she really doesn't need any solids before a year (she's 95th percentile in weight and height; so my milk is good) and 2. frankly, it's a lot of work that i'm just not ready to incorporate into our busy evenings (I work till 6pm and she's in bed by 8). And also, I have stomach/digestive issues so I feel more comfortable letting her system develope more, before taxing it with solid foods.

But, boy do I get the weird looks from people who wonder why I don't feed her solids. I get a lot of, "Isn't she hungry?" or "aren't you supposed to be feeding her solids by now?"

I was just wondering if others are going through or have been through this situation and how you handle it.

TIA

  • Amen sister. I'm delaying solids for all of the reasons you stated. No one's really giving me grief about it though, probably because I don't talk about it much. I do feel like a small minority on the 3-6 month board because it seems like a lot of people start solids at four months. To each his or her own, I suppose...

  • While I haven't been in your situation, I do not judge, just am curious what your pediatrician says about it. If (s)he is okay with it, tell ppl

  • Oh yeah... we got a lot of this before I started DS on solids. I didn't start him until about 6.5-7 months and really he still gets solids pretty sporadically (sp?). Some days he gets them offered twice, some days none, and some days he just gets bits of whatever we are eating (within reason of course). Whenever I would the get the "but he just looks so hungry" comments I'd counter with the fact that nutritionally he doesn't need solids until a year plus waiting to introduce solids helps to curtail food allergies and obesity. That plus the fact when someone would try to feed him he was more interested in the utensil helped me to overcome most situations. The rest of the time I would say my piece and then change the conversation. My baby = my choices. Hang in there with your decisions though, I know it can be annoying!

  • We are a generation returning to breastfeeding fundamentals.  I started DD on solids (rice cereal) at 4 months because I thought it would be cute, and it was.  However, I'm a SAHM, and so totally understand your time issues. For the next one, I probably won't introduce solids until 8 months or so because nursing is soooo much easier :)  Stick to your plan and damn what others say- I agree with PP: your baby, your choices.

Also, just wait 'til you get the looks when you're BF at 18 months.... egad!

  • No.  I don't really talk about that with people unless they ask though so maybe that's why.

  • I got grief for wantitng to wait to 6 months. Now I get grief for not giving her a 'variety' of foods.  And by "variety" they apparently mean frosting.  (mostly from the grandmas)

Do your research, make your decisions, ignore the 'advice'

  • I went through that.  I totally skipped cereal -  I started tentatively feeding DS dinner only (and more of it ended up on him than in him) at 6 months.  I didn't add bfast/lunch until about 8-9 months.  And I'd say he really didn't get into food until 9.5-10 months anyway.

The ladies at DS' daycare thought I was starving him!  He was in the 75% for weight/height, so I wasn't that concerned.

  • Yes. We started a few days shy of six months. So to me we were right on time, not late at all. But my mother, MIL and day care workers all found it very strange.?

All told me not starting solids was the root of our sleeping trouble, and some suggested maybe why my baby is small Hello. I'm five feet tall! Our pedi is thrilled with her weight And FWIW we've been on solids for about a month now and it hasn't helped her sleeping a bit.?
