I got a belly band at Target... not a 'Belly Bandit' though. Be Band was the brand name, I think. (I do remember it was $17.) As I recall, my choices were S/M and M/L and I'm usually an XS or S in stuff, so there wasn't much of a sizing debate.
I wear mine almost every day, more as a base layer for my belly than to hold up my pants. It's not too restrictive, but maybe other brands are more so. Mine is about as tight as a stretchy tank top.
I got a bamboo belly bandit. In the 8th month, my waist was 39.5 inches which put me at the low end of a size medium. I decided to buy a Small instead and that was a much better choice. I was able to wear it at 2 days post partum and it really helped a lot the first couple weeks. Provided great support for my back and noticeably sucked my tummy in so that it was pretty flat even with just a few hours of wearing it.
you can look at my blog where I mention it and in previous posts see how big my belly was.
I didn't use the belly bandit and my belly looked the same as PP 1 week after delivery (c-section). I gained 40 lbs with my preg, was down 20 after the first week. I don't think the bandit does anything your body wasn't going to do on its own anyway. I asked my doc about it as well and he said the same thing. Just my experience--good luck to you!

I bought the La Leche League version and I got it in small because I usually wear a small pre-pregnancyand I wanted it snug. I plan to wear it in part to help shrink up and also because I think I'll feel gross and squishy and it will just mentally help me avoid thinking about how much I dislike the belly!
Belly Bandit is definitely not for use during pregnancy. In fact, there is a warning on the box not to use it during pregnancy.
That being said, I have used a Belly Bandit since the second day after he was born. My stomach is nearly down to pre-pregnancy size two weeks later. I only take off the band when I shower or to wash it.
Although my stomach is nearly flat again, I still definitely need to do some toning! I bought a small, which was quite tight right after delivery, but now is very comfortable. I had a small waist pre-pregnancy, however.
